We are heading up Sunday to check Mt Monroe off of my friend's 4K list. I was able to convince him to visit Washington again as well by telling him that I would pay for the parking at the Cog to save us 2 miles of walking (Ammo/Jewell Loop). My questions are 1) How much does it cost? It was free when I parked there in November. 2) Where do I pay? Giftshop? And 3) Do they give you a paper pass or something? Thanks for the info in advance.

The cost is $5.00 An elderly man, older than death itself, drives around in an equally old station wagon collecting the fee. He will give you a parking permit that you put on your dash. You MUST park in the lower lot to the right.

So I have to wait for this man to spot us or will I be able to easily spot him and flag him down. $5 is a small price to pay to convince my friend to make our hike a loop.:)

In my experience, someone will be waiting at the lot. Or he will find you (especially if you park at the upper lot). ;)

He is old, yet sneaky! He will find you! I had just pulled into the lot around 6:00am, and there he was just waiting for me.

Sounds easy enough. I know where the correct lot is. I believe there was even a sign when I used it last November even though the upper lot was vacant as well. An extra 50 feet of vertical on a Mt Washington hike sure isn't going to make much of a difference. Thanks for the info.

Last summer, I paid for the parking at the same window where you buy tickets for the Cog (downstairs in the station). They will also give you a piece of paper with valid parking dates to put on your dashboard.

The old buck was standing roadside at 8:15am alongside his equally old p/u with a cap on it. He kindly took our $, gave us a pass and told us where to park. Easy enough. When we returned to Marshfield Station we gladly placed our wrappers in the trash recpticle since that was one of the ameneties that we paid for.:)

I'm curious what day of the week you found him there at 6:00 AM. I've pulled in there several times around 6:00 AM (not a Sat. or Sun.) and no one was there and the window of course wasn't open so I had to park in the NF lot down the road.

It was a Thursday morning.
