I finshed my NH 48 it was 46 ( i went over m the 48 just getting to the then 46 ) at the time On South Kinsman with My father we did them together along with my sisters for most of them but they bailed on Adams and went ot the hut as it started to rain Ha It passed quickly and my dad and i got a great view with out any one else on top my sister griped all they way down Valley way that they diod not make it one has sinece donei t with me so she could get her patch. That was before she had kids .
I finshed the winter 48 on North Kinsman of all places South Kinsman also . I was alone that time but fondly rembered being there with My Father when we did it together . Ironcally it was not planed that way .
If I was asked by some one now I would saya In NH I would save either
Adams or the Bonds for last .
IN Colorado I have climed maybe 20 14,000 ft peaks I am not sure, I think I am saving the Crestones Or Blanca peak for last . Probably Blanca. Had I known what I do now I would have saved Sunlight or Elous in the San Juans for last . But I can still go climb them again . Chicago Basin is amazing and would repeat the trip any time . And I am not in any hurry to finsh the 14,000 ft list . Any one want
to go let me know .

Dude, you sound like Climber456, is that you?

Poor Tecumseh

I agree...BUT if I could only hike one more mountain of my choice in my life it probably would not be Tecumseh!
By the way...I did Pierce first...Jackson will be last. Pierce was because it seemed doable to someone who has not done this before and Jackson because I want my family to come up with me and it is the last one I have left that I think they could do too!

I agree; Tecumseh's not the most spectacular, but I did a solo hike last year around late October from Tripoli Road, and I remember thinking it wasn't too bad. It was one of those gorgeous frosty days though, which probably didn't hurt. The pines near the summit had a thin layer of ice that sparkled in the sunlight. Very purty.

Dude I do not know who he or she is could you kindly tell me who that person is ? Some how I get the feeling you are flaming me . But then I could be wrong
I would have appreciated a PM instead of a public question and the possibiulty of pople thinking i am this person . I do not know if the individual is a jerk ,troll ect and your asking me publicly could make it difficult for me on VVFT
It would have been much more tactful if you thought I was that person. Maybe some moderation is needed in this area if there are trolls, ect on other boards and some one hear may have aimilar style of writting or such. that the issue be discussed privatly insted of in public. As it could cuase problems with the person who is not the trolll, troublemaker ect on another board. It would avoid stigmatizing that person as I think you might have done to me As I .have found out he or she is a rather contorversial poster on the AMC site . Maybe this is a matter for the moderators ? I am not sure But please send me a email or PM bfore making a public acusation thank you .
Also it could well be the person who is seen as a troll on a AMC board might not be a seen as a or even be a troll ect elswhere? I understand that due to trolling and some very offensive posters, allgedly some racist stuff was on the AMC board it has lost a section and is not as active now. I want nothing to do with that BS and do not use the AMC board because of it lack of modrstion not to mention it is a AMC board and I do not like the AMC . To be hinest I am surprised the allgedly "liberal " AMC tolerated racist posters if it is true

Climber456 is on the AMC Boards. I think he thought that you were him.

I do not and will not post on a AMC board or have any thing to do with them . I hope that clarifies things . I guess in a way unbeknownst to MR X I was "Flamed "
OK now back to the topic . yes they all have thier special parts though I will not do Owls head unless I am gaurnateed it will not snow or rain as every time I do it (4 times ). Yeah I go along with others who are pekabagiing just to get out and hike. Every time go to Owls Head it rains or snows . In a way even that can be special .

Carrigain

I am saving Carrigain for last. Only because it has worked out that way. I have Cabot, Waumbek and Carrigain to climb still. We tried Carrigain a couple of years ago in January but decided to turn around when we weren't making good time and it was starting to get dark. I don't want to finish on a peak without a view, so I'll save Carrigain for last.

I find it hard to believe—not that I think anyone's lying about it, it just seems incredible—that there are possibly several White Mountain peaks that nobody has ever finished the 48 upon. Every Adirondack High Peak has at least one finish on it, and there are thousands more completers in the Whites than in the Adirondacks.

And how much of a "coolness factor" can there be (for the peaks that have never been Number 48 on anyone's list) if only one or two people are aware of the fact? Are they planning to announce it or award a prize as each mountain loses this distinction?

I wanna see some numbers. Heck, I'd like to see how many people have ever done them in the exact same order as I. Or if anyone has. I can see it now: Type in "Washington," a long list appears. Type in "Lafayette," the list becomes shorter. "Lincoln;" little change. "Liberty;" a little shorter again. "Adams;" shorter still...

Now that would be cool.

I'll probably do Carrigain last. I have 4 left and Carrigain will be a hike I can take people on who don't usually hike. I have some sons I want with me this summer when I do my last of the 48. Plus I hear it has spectacular views!

Well, the "coolness" thing is just my opinion not a universal truth. I think it's neat that there are several peaks that haven't been finished on and even if I hadn't already done them, I wouldn't change my plan from finishing on Carrigain. I agree with the thought that there are no "dull" ones. They are all unquine and special in their own right. I certain have great memories of Zealand, Galehead, and Tecumseh. They are just as good as my memories of Moosilauke, Garfield, and Lafayette. I just think that it will be cool to finish with a view of most of the peaks I visited on my journey to that goal. Maybe my ideas of what's cool are a bit warped... :)

NH 48: Jefferson, didn't really choose it, just sort of happened that way.

I think I would have been bummed if my final 48 was Galehead......blah.

Galehead......blah.
Galehead was great for me, my first of the 48 in a way. I was section hiking the NH AT with my father, and my wife was along as well. We had climbed Moosilauke and the Kinsmans on previous section trips. On the way to Galehead Hut, I had hiked the Franconia Ridge and Garfield. Before dinner, I was looking at this cool book they had there, the "White Mountain Guide" - I had been using ATC maps. In the back of the book there was this list of 4000 foot peaks, I read a little further, and the next I knew I was hiking up to Galehead's summit, a little embarassed to be hiking a peak because it was on a list. By the next day, I was bagging peaks like Zealand without apology. Now that seems forever ago.

I still say there is no "blah".

The Day I hiked Galehead was actually my favorite day I've had hiking thus far. We went over N. & S. Twin, hit Galehead (then up Twin again). It was a beautiful day (135 +mile visibility)and saw some people that we knew and didn't expect to see out on the trail. But,I think Galehead would be a disappointing finish …at least for me, different strokes for different folks :D right.

I've already done Zealand twice in the summer and once in the winter.
;)

Galehead

I liked Galehead. It was my 24th and reaching the halfway point there felt cool. We then went over to the Twins. It was an important part of one of my favorite trips. I also really liked Waumbek because that was my wifes 30th, my 31st and my dog's 1st (he's not that great a hiker). Often, the occasion and / or the company are what make a trip great. Seldom is anyone's 48th a bad trip, regardless of where it is. Just try to make it as enjoyable as possible. :D

Galehead's summit might not have the best view in the world, but there's a nice outlook approaching the summit that makes it worthwhile

any hike outdoors beats hanging out at home, eh ?

save summits with better views for good weather days, hike summits with limited views on viewless days, and enjoy the views you get along the trails

Well stated...so many of us seem to only focus on the summit. If I hike for 10 hours I am likely at a great view for less that one of those hours. I damn well better be getting some enjoyment from the other nine hours! The journey is the best part!

WM4s:
first: Moosilauke (age 4)
last: Madison (the last one on a three-day Presi traverse - an excellent way to finish IMHO - I had only done Washington before that trip)

NE4s and NE100:
Katahdin, Baxter Peak ('nuf said)

WM4s in winter (35/48):
first: Pierce (2/29/2000)
last: honestly considering Zealand, possibly Waumbek but only because I already have the date picked out (2/29/2008 - having young children at home keeps progress slow, but maybe I'll get impatient) and of the ones I have left it's the most doable in questionable weather.

Also, the statement about Isolation being the most common final peak is from the official information letter that the 4000-Footer Committee sends out. However, in recent years, another peak has occasionally beaten it - any guesses?

Eric -- I'll guess that Carrigain has occasionally beaten Isolation as the last peak. Am I right? ... Do I win a prize??? :D
