While on the subject of proper fit and proper form, and as relating to hiking and knees, let me point out another adverse side effect of improper form and improper fit -- it can mess up your knees.
As an example, my ortho suggested that as part of the "what is wrong with Tim's knees" process, I have the bike fit checked. Why? It's been fine for years. Well I took his advice and learned that the seat post (which was replaced a year ago with a carbon one) had slid down an inch or so, probably over time, a bit on each bump, and was now out of place. This could have easily contributed to my chondromalacia patella.
