Decided to skip up this peak today, since it's been on the radar for a bit, managed to drive to the end of Tower Road and simply parked on the south side of the road, Somebody left tracks that end in about 50 feet in and I continued in... Obvious Irene damage as the streams and runoffs have created some really big gullys down the road or what's left of it. Nobody is driving to the tar paper shack unless he/she has a monster truck with a LOT of clearance. Anyway, following the stream, crossing it a few times (the streams are flowing but was somewhat iced enough that I could jump on ice block to block) I eventually get to the tar paper shack and take a break to delayer, check my bearings and get ready for the real ascent.
Going somewhat magnetic north, I check to make sure I'm headed off to the right direction, knowing the col is around 3k feet, I could kind of see the col that I am headed too and eventually after passing some cairns and some odd markers, I hit the T junction where I turn right to head to S/N Dorset.
At this point there is about 3 of new snow over old hardpack snow/ice. I bareboot the entire hike, but microspikes could be useful on the descent cause of the ice underneath new snow. I take the right turn at the next junction which heads uphill and I follow somebody;s old blown in tracks on a herdpath that goes right to the South Dorset. Take a few pictures, head on over to Doorknob Junction and eventually to the canister. Fortunately, not frozen! so I sign in and return back to doorknob junction and take the trail back to the col. FYI, there is a new necktie at the junction which looks recent! I took a picture of it...
Back down for about a 3.5 hour hike, complete barebootable.. I think it is about a 6.6 mile hike with some good elevation.. Did not see any signs of any snowmobiles...
