Geneva has been holding at 22 of the 48 for far too long, so I thought I would make yet another attempt to get her over to Osceola.
We had a good late 'arm' start at 11:30, and made our way along the trail at a nice enjoyable pace. Not too many bugs, cooler temps and sunlight dappeling through the trees.
Geneva was remarkably well behaved, passing by other hikers without even looking at them. I passed by one group of 3 women, one made the comment 'I love our leash laws at home'. It took a lot out of me not to tell her to go home then... I could see someone being upset at a growling and jumping dog. But Geneva just walked by, minding her own business. Some people are just not 'dog' people I guess...
We passed by a few more people, and leapfrogged with 2 young men a few times and fairly quickly we were at the nice flat area with a couple of decent lookouts just before the cairn. (Very enjoyable after the section of um, shall we say not very flat section prior to it...)
I placed a rock on the top of the cairn, which looked like it had fallen over, and started for Osceola. Well, not far down the trail I got a good look at it, and the big chubby fat black bellied clouds waiting for us over there...
Now, I am not really sure what to do in a thunderstorm. And I didn't really want to dig out my survival guilde and do a little light reading right then and there. I knew there were no longer thunderstorms in the forecast, but the forcast hadn't really been spot on lately either. Plus, Geneva was looking so hot in her black fur suit, and for the first time ever hiking she was looking like she wanted to turn around. So we did.
We both had energy when we got back to the trail junction, so we made the quick stroll down to Greely Pond so Geneva could practice her swimming and stick retrieving techniques. She had a blast! We met a fisherman there who said he didn't mind her at all being in the water, and he was still catching fish on the other side of the lake while we were there, so I suppose the fish didn't mind either.
It was a quick walk back to the car, and a towel dry for Geneva. She is still holding at 22, but we hope to change that really soon!
