Haven't been out hiking for awhile now and I had a strong urge to get out of the house so I called my brother-in-law Dave Bear to see if he might join me on an Easter sunrise hike. He of course could not resist and promptly agreed. I got up at 1:30am and headed to meet him at the Park Headquarters at 3:30am. Saw 4 deer in the road on Dublin Road and had to wait for them to get out of the road. I arrived at 3:15am and my sister called at 3:30am to say he was just leaving the house. I decided to wait for him to arrive and we got on the trail at 5am instead of 6am. We headed out on the White Dot Trail and soon managed to end up on Cascade Link. It appeared that White Dot had been re-routed. No problems, we didn't really care which way we got up there anyway. We slipped onto the Red Spot Trail at 2150' and approached some steeper terrain. My thighs which have not seen hiking in awhile, decided to remind me of my offense but we were soon on the Pumpelly Trail headed for the summit. The sun made an attempt to break through the clouds but did not seem to be winning the battle. It was windy and I soon put on layers. Dave waited till later to get his extra layers on. We saw one person on the summit. We took some pictures, enjoyed the views and hunkered down out of the wind for our hot chocolate and coffee and lots of Easter Treats. Dave and I both brought peeps. We also shared Rees'es peanut butter eggs, rasberry filled chocolates, jelly beans and all manner of nutritional Easter treats. Yum Yum. I had mentioned to Dave about the idea of going down a different trail to explore some new terrain so we headed down on the White Arrow and turned off toward the Cliff Walk trail to Dome Rock. We both really enjoyed this trail and it's views. We were having a-lot of fun exploring. On our way down on the Lost Farm Trail we took a short detour to follow the park and Society for the Protection of NH Forests boundary that had been recently remarked. Continuing on down the trail surface was mostly smooth ground with few rocks ( a refreshing relief from all the ledges and rock hopping earlier this day). We walked through a beautiful forest of tall oaks with great big arms reaching out in all directions. It was a lovely place. I thought that on a warmer day I might have just stayed there awhile and maybe wrote in a journal or just sit there under a big old tree and day dream awhile. We enjoyed light conversation and both seemed to be enjoying ourselves. We came upon a great big hollow tree right on the trail and as you can see in the pics, we just couldn't resist climbing inside to get a "tree hug". It was fun. Life has been way to serious for me lately and I really needed to get out and do something I love so much. Before we knew it we were down on the Parker trail, passing the reservoir and with snow falling at 40 degrees we were in the parking lot. Thanks Dave for sharing this day with me and for a lunch of Easter Eggs, ham and pancakes back at your house.
