If all goes well, I hope to leave at 3:30 on Friday. That puts me at the campground about 8pm (depending on Garden state Parkway traffic). I am willing to spot cars Friday night if its still needed when I get there. I am planning to start between 5 and 530 on Sat.

Carol, I should be able to setup my tent and crap and perhaps meet you friday night at Schutt Road. (I'm aware of the traffic getting out friday so I'll bring stuff to read and I'll be aware that you may be late). Then I can leave my Outback down there and we can go back to the campground. Bring the shower necessities and you can leave it in my car. Even if I get there first, I can give your bag to Warren or somebody there so you can get to it after you finish. But I'll probably hang around the end a bit and help anyway.

Jay..
Perhaps it would make more sense to crap first, then set up your tent... :D

My plan is to get up to the campground around 4 PM depending on my passenger's schedule.
This will give me time to set up camp and help with car spotting if required.
Jay maybe we can go some where for dinner.

What will be the official start time....and where exactly will we meet? What is the weather outlook at this point?

info & directions update.

Official start time will be 5:30am. Those that are staying at the campground could theoretically get a ride to the trailhead and then the shuttler could drive down to the End to pick up the folks who need a shuttle which at this point would be Ralph and Aaron. Fred H (frytz) emailed me saying him and Jade will just drive to the trailhead on Rt 23 in the morning. I emailed TeeJay about the shuttle and he is good for 4:30AM at Scutt Road....

Seema, Ed, anybody else who wants to start at 5am, we surely could arrange for a shuttle and certainly you could car pool down to the trailhead, it should not be hard to find as you can see the trailhead from the road on the right. I might actually join you folks at 5am.. I don't know, I'm a light sleeper and don't mind early starts anyway.

Update on the directions. I contacted Peg at the campsite, she says my directions is that "Old Rt 23" is the same as "CR 20" so you may see signs after Bernio's steakhouse for CR20 and not "Old Rt 23". But when I checked mapquest, it has it as Old Rt 23...

P.S. I keep calling the end of the Escarpment trail Schutt Road, it apprently is Scutt Rd without the h

Since I plan on starting early - 5ish, I can carpool people from the campground to the trailhead. I can get 3-4 besides myself in the car.

I'll be driving in on Saturday morning and go directly to the trailhead. I plan on starting with the 5:00 am group. Since I won't be there Friday night, I'll have to carry the change of clothes needed unless there is someone at the trailhead who is willing to shuttle. I'll plan for either event.

I have 2 questions:

1. Who if anyone can help me shuttle myself, Brian and my camping gear from Scutt Rd to the campsite at about 6:30 pm on Friday?

2. Is there anyone leaving FROM the campsite to help shuttle people from Scutt Rd to the start and what time are these folks thinking of leaving the campsite to get to Scutt Rd . . . did that make sense?

Thanks everyone,

It makes sense

Seema. I may be available to drive or you're welcome to take my car to drop yours at Schutt Rd. (Edit: if you come to the campground first

For everyone staying at the campground: I will be bringing my large coffee pot, coffee, half and half, and sugar. I'll set it up on a timer so it should be ready by 4:00 AM at the campground.

Somebody asked about the weather for Saturday... Looks good so far!

NOAA weather for Haines Falls

Seema:

1) I have plans to pick up Carol and spot my car at the end on Friday night at 8:30-9PM... If anybody can't pick you up at 6:30pm then I can always make two trips.. I'm sure I fit all you and Brian's gear in my Outback. I will have already set up my gear at the campsite when I get there Friday.

...I guess you aren't planning to make a grand 10:30PM appearence this time??? :) No WRs!

2) TeeJay emailed me and said he was going to leave around 4am from the campsite to go pick up Ralph and Aaron at Scutt Rd at 4:30am, He should have room for 1 or possibly 2 more skinny hikers. That would then probably force a 5:30AM start at Rt 23.

Jay, sounds good for Friday night plans, I can always run a shuttle with TeeJay's car if needed after I set up my tent and stuff.

I was asking about plans to leave Saturday, not for a car shuttle BUT to see if I could convince that person, in this case, TeeJay to drop Brian and I at the trailhead to start before heading to Scutt Rd. I will have to get myself to bed real early if I want to get out of there by 4 am though :)

Hello Folks

I've finalized my plans which are slightly non-mainstream. Feel free to join me.

1) I'm not quite up to the full hike so TJ and I are going in to the support station just before Blackhead (Batavia Kill Trail intersection) and after serving the throng for a couple of hours we're hiking over Blackhead and then out via the Black Dome Range Trail (hitting Black Dome and Thomas Cole). This will be 6 or 7 miles total but will include the steepest climb (up Blackhead).

2) Friday afternoon I'm climbing Slide. I'll probably get to the trailhead a bit after 1:00 PM. After this I should make it to the campground by 5:00 or 6:00.

3) Sunday morning I'm climbing Hunter. I'll head over to the treailhead after breakfast.

PM or email me if interested.

BTW: Is anyone going out to dinner Friday night? I don't really feel like cooking over a camp stove (of course a campfire later in the evening with marshmallows and beer would be just fine :))

See you all there.

Yes, I'm sure a bunch of us will want to grab an informal bite to eat on Friday.. There is food at the campground and since the nice lady is letting us stay there for free pretty much, I was thinking about patronizing it. plus I'm sure we'll all be arriving at different times. However, since you'll be coming in from Slide Mtn Rd, I could suggest Brios in Phoenicia as a good place for dinner that has pretty good pizza. I've been there before and it is on the way. See the directions that I emailed to you.

Or you could always just come to the campground and join our impromptu dinner clan. Friday night dinners was fairly informal last year so I expect the same this time around.

I'd help with the shuttling on Friday but I probably won't be getting to the campground until 8-9PM so I'll help shuttle people to the trailhead on Saturday morning. As for Saturday morning... I'm a bit of a faster walker so I don't plan on starting quite so early (5AM) so if there's anyone out there like me let me know. I'm a first timer to one of these events (and to this board) so anything in general I should bring that you 'veterans' can think of?

Quick Question: What time are people aiming for reaching Schutt Road around/by on Saturday afternoon/evening? I only ask because it'll help me figure out what time I should get started on Saturday morning.

Seema, do you want to leave a 4 or be at the trail head by 4? IF you wave a cold diet pepsi in front of me early sat morning I can probably be convinced to leave at 4 or very soon thereafter. I can probably stuff 3-4 people besides myself in the car.

I was thinking about leaving at 4 am if I could convince someone to give me a ride. I figure I will hit the hay by 9-10 pm and get up around 3 am, get going by 4 so I will add a diet pepsi to my list of things but how to keep it cold ;)

I'm taking Friday off and will try to be up at camp in the afternoon some time. I might stop for a quick run into Kaaterskill Falls if I have time. I should be up plenty early to set up tent, help w/ a car spot if necessary and grab a bite to eat. Then I want to sack out by 9. I might go w/ the earlier group if I'm up in time, or if not I'll be w/ Mtn Goat and any later-leaving folks. I'm sure there will be slowing down, speeding up, passing by, catching up, etc. all day.

BTW, Mtn Goat, several pages back on this thread, Aaron (Askus3) posted his time schedule from when he did this hike years ago. He claims he's a slow hiker, but his times might be useful as a reference point at least. As for your question about stuff to bring, I'd suggest binocs and/or a camera if you're into views. If it's clear, we'll have some good 'uns.

I look forward to seeing and meeting you all. I'm pretty pumped-one of my bosses kicked in a pretty generous donation today. :)
