Thanks, Chris. On our ride home, shortly before Plymouth, a fox jumped across the highway in front of us. So we smelled fox, and saw one, and fortunately didn't hit it. I wonder how many other times in the February/March mating season we think we smell skunk when it actually is fox?

We have both skunks and foxes living under peoples' decks in our neighborhood. I think the foxes smell stronger!! (but they are very similar and I would vote for fox too, in your story)

The only smell I associate with FS bridges is creosote, but am reasonably sure they stopped using timber treated/dipped in creosote some years ago.

Bigfoot suposedly has a really bad odor, and a tendency for leaving in-line tracks. And has ostensibly been seen in that general area.
