Today, 10/2, Franconia Notch was near its peak and just lovely with snow-covered Franconia Ridge as a backdrop.

The lower Garfield Trail was covered with confetti-like leaves

Here are two from Carrigain today, showing the remarkable speed at which the rime can vaporize:

Yesterday (10/2) at 12:54 there was snow on the summits of the Twins-Bond range, as seen from the downlook on the Osseo Trail:

Back at the downlook at 14:33 the snow was gone:

Not the best of photos, but enough to make the point!

North Central Vermont

The many small peaks in Central Vermont seem to be at or slightly past peak.
Spruce Mountain and any of the hikes in Groton State Forest are sure to be colorful.
Here's the view from Plainfield on Hollister Hill, during a brief break in the cloud cover today:

Tim,
Nice shot! What do you shoot with? Obviously something much better than my $165 cannon digital!

That was made from 2 shots with a 5D MkII using a 24-105 zoom at 40mm, using a polarizer and a 3 stop GND filter to hold the sky back. It's stitched together with Hugin, an excellent freeware Panorama tool that is very easy to use.

Will the hills aflame in color, now would be a great time to take the Vermont Fire Tower Tour!

Great shots so far in this thread...

This foliage season is truly turning out to be the best in many years in the Northern White Mountains. Nearing peak, the richness of the reds, and the glow of the yellows is truly remarkable.

The weather the past few days has been extremely variable...sun, clouds, fog, thunderstorms, wind, warm, cold, rain, and a few perfect landscape skies. Given the variability, I opted for less hiking this weekend, and more seeking specific sites that fit the weather's mood swing of the moment. That's not to say I didn't put some mileage on my feet. I was able to enjoy short hikes to Ammonoosuc Lake, to Little Cherry Pond, a bushwhack along the Saco River, and Basin Pond.

Here's a few shots...I'll be processing more them this week, and share them here when time allows! In chronological order...

Lastly, I learned this weekend that not all autumn shots need to be of foliage. While at Little Cherry Pond last night with Ryan last night, storm clouds and calm winds created a stunning scene at sunset. Not at all what I expected to shoot that evening, but a great moment to witness and capture.

Beautiful photos from everyone! Jim, spectacular as always. Rick B. - that is an amazing shot with the butterfly and the bee! Wow!

It's been a challenge to chase down some good weather to go with the superb foliage we are having this year. On Friday, Mark and I headed up north to check out the Mahoosucs. The foliage was right at peak, maybe a bit past in some spots, and a crust of rime ice was everywhere over 3000 feet. Visibility was for miles and miles under heavily overcast skies. Again, it was a challenge to get any crispness in detail with the low lighting. For a rainless day, we got more than our share of melting rime ice rain from the branches above.

Stopped and ran up a hill in Twin Mountain on the trip north to check out Lafayette peeking out of the clouds:

I was able to come home to New England this weekend, and take some foliage photos. Although I didn't get a chance to do any real hiking in the whites (darn cold!!) I was able to photograph at a few places. Thanks to the amazing colors this year, taking pics basically in my own backyard in SE NH worked out well. But the first set is from the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee VT.

Rainy day, so the pics aren't as bright as they could be. I call the first set "subtle color."

A bit blurry, but I still like it

Ok, if those are subtle, the next set is bright and loud!
