Hey everyone!

I was recently asked what my favorite frozen waterfalls were in new england and I couldn't think of any oustanding ones off the top besides Arethusa Falls in NH.

Does anybody here have a favorite or two? Perhaps one that presents an outstanding ice sculpture?

Greg - as you may recall, I am quite fond of Angel Falls southwest of Rangeley, ME. It is absolutely amazing in the winter, but hard to get to as the Bemis Track is not plowed and there are lots of stream crosssings, too. I have a picture at work. Will send on Monday.

Regards
Marty

Crystal Cascade Falls-Mt Ascutney

The nicest frozen waterfall I encountered was Crystal Cascade Falls, On Mt Ascutney Vt.

It is the Second Waterfall on the Weathersfield Trail. You walk right above it so you have to bushwhack down 84 feet or so.

When I went there the water had frozen, in such a way that it was glowing Sky Blue.
It also had formed as if someone had taking a thick sugar syrup (Making Candy) and poured it just as it was cooling.

Fletcher Cascades in Waterville Valley was quite impressive last March.

I haven't seen it frozen, but Sabbaday Brook off the Kanc is probably quite a sight.

New York also

The series of waterfalls on the Race Brook in the Taconics of Massachusetts are very nice frozen.

And if we could widen this to include New York:
  • Chittenango Falls - in central NY east of Syracuse
  • Roaring Brook Falls - Adirondacks
  • Kaaterskill Falls - Catskills
  • Awosting Falls - Shawangunks

Though not really a hike, I think Glen Ellis Falls is the most impressive to me, as the strong 'tube' of water becomes completely encased in ice despite the impressive winter flows! Well worth a stop!

There is an ice climb at Frankenstien cliffs called "Chia" this is most beautifull and one of my most memorable days climbing as it was the day " I climbed like a big boy" many climbs followed but that one was like my first, you never forget. ;)

hey everyone,

Thanks for all your input!

There were a lot of excellent suggestions throughout, including some I hadn't even considered.

Marty - that picture is awesome. It makes me want to give ice climbing a shot....almost

The frankenstein area alone has tons of gorgeous flows that you can get to just walking along the train tracks.
For frozen falls I'd just buy the NE ice climbing guide :)

Bridal Veil Falls at the end of the Coppermine Trail in Franconia. When we saw it in winter it had ribbons of gold colored ice due to seepage from the mossy rocks above. A good trail to ski if it hasn't been tromped by barebooters.

Coppermine gets my vote too. The multicolor blues and greens are nice.
We camped at the shelter a few years ago in Spring and the entire ice face of the falls let go with an earth-shaking crash about 3AM,scaring the !@#?? out of us. It wasn't till a torrent of ice and water went rushing past the shelter that we realized what happened.
