FINALLY!! Here we are...met Gary at the Stoneybrook TH, dropped a car, and head over to Bangor Street to begin the FINAL peak on my list.
It was a very nice start...good trail, good conversation (everything from animal prints to the Casino in Maine). Not a lot of snow, but just enough to let us know that winter is on the way. Finally, we begin to break out on the ledges and get some views. It was about here that the sun tried to come out.
It was also here that the traction came out...although not entirely mandatory...it sure did make the trek a little less frustrating. We enjoyed the peak-a-boo views
and the pretty ice along the trail
and the, the first of my perils occurred...the men went this a way...I thought that way looked better...I stepped...and WOOSH!! the foot didn't hold and I was sliding on my backside down the trail. Now, granted...it was only about 15 feet down...but...it really made things interesting If only I could have gotten my camera out in time...the two guys had quite the look of horror on their faces. After asking if I was ok, we all had quite the laugh about this...Non the worse for wear...we continued onward and upward.
The sky continued to show blue here...gray there...spitting snow now...windy off and on. On and on...nice trail...firm and ...PLUNK..really muddy. I think I stepped up to the top of my ankle in a mud hole that wasn't frozen. The comment was "oh thanks for finding that for us...we'll be sure to go around". I guess, chivalry really is dead.
Finally, there it was...the sign for "summit this way". WOW!!! this is it! After jumping on the marker...shouting for joy...and big hugs...the summit shot to confirm it all...I'm VERY PROUD OF THIS ONE!
More shots from the summit
Interestingly, just as we started down...the wind started whipping (we estimated some of the gusts were 50 - 60) and it started to snow...
The ledgy areas coming down on the Stoney Brook Side were AWESOME!!! We laughed at the wind and loved the snow in our faces...this was a blast! I guess the "mountain gods" wanted me to really remember this trip...as I was going under a blowdown...it let go and landed (softly thank god) on me. SIGH!!! I think the guys had given up being concerned...they laughed quickly this time. But then again, so did I.
We had a great time descending and only saw one other hiker on the way down.
After saying goodbye to Gary (he was heading back home to take his sweety out to dinner...she'd been a busy bee all day)...Hubby and I headed back to the hotel to shower, eat, and reminisce about our journey...it has been quite something both in terms of climbing and for us as a couple.
Just a quick thanks to all on this forum who have been there through all my questions and questions and questions. Hope to meet some of you in April at the Banquet!!
Now what...hmmmmm...maybe we'll shoot for the grid
