So instead of waiting to keep trying different kayaks in the Spring I saw a Tempest 170 for sale used on Paddling.net and I bought it ($850)....It's tough to keep spending $25-$30 every time going out for 2 hours and trying to decide which kayak to buy..I tried this one a few months ago on a crazy full moon trip and I had a blast, so I figured "what the heck"...
I'm looking forward to a pool session that I signed up for in March...until then I'll continue to diet, read and watch video's, maybe not in that order..did lose 6lbs since new years..this was also my first missed winter gathering since 04, I do miss hiking..

Congratulations!
Nothing like a nice warm pool for some winter practice.
Good luck.

Congrats..

Not sure about anybody else, but I've never heard that comment about buying too big a boat to begin with... Unless you plan on doing tiny creeks, I can't see you fitting in my 14' Impex either. :)

Chris, the pool session is for members in March, the cost to join the group is $35 for the year....for me it's worth joining because they will hook me up with a "mentor" and I'll be able to go at my pace....see if u still have that message about the Dingy shop Feb meeting...I also joined the yahoo Tempest group...just for fun reading....

Carol, looking forward to getting together and seeing Wildwood from the water...also want to do some simple camping trips anywhere...

Jay...yea, I was a little down after that guy gave me his "advise" and rethought my purchase, but I'm very happy now.....I'm playing it safe and will wait for the pool lesson..

What about those NFC Champion Giants!...
:D

So...... Should we start planning a spring kayak camping trip to Round Valley Reservoir, located off route 78 Just East of Clinton, NJ? (About 1h:15 out of NYC)
Meet up on a Friday evening and have a nice paddle in, paddle around on Saturday and pack out on Sunday? Those who want to hike in can certainly join us.

The campsites are accessible only as a 3-5 mile hike in or a 4-5 mile paddle, depending on what site you choose and which shore you hug. It is about 3 miles directly across from the boat launch to the campsites

Stan.....I would never trash talk against someone who travels with Tequila and shares it

Tony..... thx...My friend wants to do some kayak fishing and we checked out some websites...you would go nuts looking at the fish and kayak setups...I'll look for the link...big bucks, with fish finders and gps...

Rick.....Sounds great....are we thinking about May/June?

If you are interested in kayak fishing, a good friend of mine who lives not far from me is a kayak fisherman. In fact, I met him one morning at Split Rock reservoir, while he was fishing and I was just out for a little float. He's on P.net but not really a serious hiker... He's got a rod mount on his kayak and he'll go fishing from it now and then. If you have any qs, I can send you his email address..

May?? June??? What's with this Warm weather Kayaking....??? I keep a steel hull on my yak to break through winter pack ice!

Seriously, I think down here, even April is a good time to get out. I do tend to stay very close to shore when the water is cold.

Daxs, Mountain biking might be fun to add to the mix. Though I never rode in RV, so I don't know what the trails are like..

I will start a thread entitled Round Valley Gathering and put out a poll for some dates.... I'd love to have a gathering down here. for the NYNJPA contingent.... (and anybody else who would like to come)

I've had some folks express interest about paddling Splitrock reservoir too, it's a nice place, less developed than RV, i.e. no campsite, sirens, etc. :)

April it is!....I did buy a johnny suit last month, just need to lose app 8-10 more lbs so I don't get mistaken for a walrus  and harpooned by some guy with a steel hull!

Congrats Dave. You have only begun to buy all the gear!! The best part is that you now have the perfect need for presents for birthdays, etc. Get an NRS catalog and begin circling stuff! NRS

Tour away - your lawn form is just perfect! :D

Hi GUYS,
I'm another metro-area (Hudson Valley) paddler. I'm game for a Spring camping trip or resevoir paddle. Last year I paddled Rio Res. and watched the bald eagles soaring over head.
Where are these pool sessions, I'd be interested in joining in.
