Because of Wednesday's rain storm, the Whiteface River crossings were very difficult. Doable though if you didn't mind wet feet and bushwhacking a up stream to find just the right spot. The river was a loud torrent cascading and shooting up over huge boulders. The sound of it rang in our ears long after the the trail made its turn away from the river and towards the pond.
Footing through the quiet woods was at first pleasant, soft and dry giving way to a mix of wet, boggy moss and mud., leaf covered rocks and roots, moose & bear sign, black trumpet mushrooms. We had a quick lunch at a neat campsite by Flat Mountain Pond.
Our goal for the day was to explore three old logging camps so after lunch we headed up the old railroad bed. We spent the afternoon bushwhacking and poking around the moss covered rocks and autumn leaves. It was thrilling to come across a railroad switch, old buckets, shovels, bed frames, parts of iron stoves, rusty wash basins, coffee pots and pitchers.
We imagined the loggers having a soak after a long hot day in this perfect little woodland tub!
Steve & Karen B. Hamming it up in the woods!
After a summer of spectacular hikes on breathtaking summits, this was a unique and very special day in a beautiful, wet and wild wilderness area. Thanks Steve for showing us a little piece of history in the middle of the woods! And thanks Gordon for helping me with the tricky and scary river crossings!
