No clue on the flora, but I agree with CragginCragin on the fauna. That was an easy one.

Easy for you perhaps - but I come from a country that has only two types of snake
Yup - I identified it using THIS great web site at UMASS Amherst. Very informative.
The flora is of course Lupin, just coming into bloom in Western Massachusetts.
I almost trod on the snake! It was on the path and froze as I approached. Luckily I was on the lookout for things to photograph in the last of the days (hopefully not weekends!) sunshine.
It stayed still for a few minutes as I snapped away and then slithered under a shrub leaving only its tail sticking out which it promptly wagged at me! Gave me pause for thought, but there was no accompanying rattle
