Flume - Osseo trail

Flume / Osseo Trail 3/26/2011

First time we hike in New Hampshire with winter conditions.
Toward the parking lot of Lincoln Wood Center, it is snowing a little and the mountains are not visible. In addition to the little snow, it is windy and with fairly strong gusts. And I think the weather is not much better for sunday.
We park the car and immediately we see Sabrina that we had not seen for many years. We were very happy to see her. She is with two friends Tim and Eric.
We start about 8:15 and we cross the suspension bridge. Annie remembers that last year, after crossing the bridge, we encountered a bear. This should not be happening today. Since they are still in hibernation.
Annie puts her new snowshoes, Evo Ascent, at the jonction of Lincoln Trail Wood and Osseo Trail. I decided to go bare boots only for a while. The trail is on a hard and frozen base with 2 inches of fresh snow. I wanted to do this summit by Oseseo Trail because it is a new trail for us. That's what we want to do with the mountains we have already did. The trail has a nice gradual slope from beginning to end.
At 2900 feet altitude, I decided to put my snowshoes. And from this elevation there are between 6-10 inches of new snow. We wondered where was the famous ladders or stairs should be in the final stretch of the climb. No trace of it, they must be buried under the snow.
At the jonction, no tracks coming up from the Flume Slide Trail. Just before the open area, Annie says she does not want to go because the wind is too strong and she's afraid. She said, "I'll wait here." I leave my bag with her and I run in the summit direction. Near the Slide I see, in strong wind and snow, 3 people ahead of me. They must had climb by the slide. The wind noise is so loud and it's so cold. My cheeks hurt me, despite my tube, my hat and my glasses. As soon as I reached the summit I run back immediately, I take two pictures and I hurry back to the shelter with Annie. Let me tell you that the wind was very strong. My glasses came full of snow and ice and I do not see anything. I have not freeze like this for a long time. My goal was to do Flume and Liberty, without telling Annie. But what, it is not necessary to say everything. I must resign myself to Flume only but it's okay like that. And also it is really not the ideal conditions.
We take our lunch at the jonction and soon, we return to the parking lot. The back portion was super fast with some long butt slides.
It was a very nice hike in the White Mountain for the first time.:)

Saturday was perhaps the most wintery day I've felt even this whole winter! And its SPRING!?
Very windy day. Good to see you both. The conditions, we also realized, were marginal at best for being near and above treeline, but as its now Spring, the winter pressure is off and we thought we'd try for some adventure as well, and see where we got too.
Glad to hear you both made it back to your warm car safely.
:) And hope to see more of you both soon!

Yvon . . . very nice trip report! Hope you and Annie will come back to hike in NH again when the wintery conditions are not so severe. Sorry the wind prevented you from including Liberty, but you and Annie still managed to have a great hike.
