I really wish they'd put this on their home page, instead of burying it (no pun intended!):

Learning to recognize avalanche terrain is the first and most important step in avalanche hazard evaluation.

Long before you get to digging pits and discussing the arcane details of the snowpack, learning to recognize avalanche terrain and how to choose routes accordingly should be on your to-do list.
