Hi all - new VFTT member here. Love the info and discussion on here, so I wanted to pass along a trip report.
Wednesday looked too nice in the forecast to pass up a hike somewhere. So, I play hookie and decided to do Franconia Ridge because I hadn't been up there in almost two years. Stashed my bike at the Lafayette trailhead and drove back to Liberty Springs trailhead and was on the trail at 9:20am. The Flume Slide Trail was completely empty of people and pretty wet and muddy in places, with a few decent blowdowns to boot, but all navigable. The slide itself was, you guessed it, wet! Reached the summit of Flume at 11:20am with still no one to be seen. I rarely hike midweek, so the lack of people was certainly different.
All that was there on the summit of Flume.
From there, it was over to Liberty. There was one guy with some pretty intense photography equipment soaking in the views, so I didn't interrupt.
I was there for only a couple minutes before I started towards Little Haystack. This was my first time on that 2 mile stretch of the AT, and it was beautiful! The trail was in great condition as expected and it was so serene that I hoped the whole hike was like that! But before I knew it, I was at Little Haystack, which has to be one of the best 'non-peak peaks' in the Whites. I saw Lincoln in my sights, so I left after a quick Gu and made it to Lincoln at 12:30pm.
Lafayette was next, and the crowds grew substantially (for a Wednesday, I assume). Reached the crowded summit at 1:15pm - ate, snapped a couple photos, shut my eyes for a few minutes, and left for the base via Old Bridle.
Got to my bike at 4:15pm with a pretty sore knee, but endless views and some good exercise made for a great day! Gotta love the ridge!
