When you say near Allen do you mean near the mountain or the trailhead? You cross much private land on the way in and can't camp until basically the base of the mountain. For campground there is Sharp Bridge not too far but I hear it is noisy now with the rumble strips on the highway. I'm sure others will have suggestions.

Oops, I see now that you are looking for free camping. Not sure where you would find this close to Allen.

I'm going to have a couple of people with me and I don't think we can all sleep cozy in my car...just wanted to see if there was anything around there...it doesn't have to be at the base ...but the closer the better.

You don't want to backpack right? Just a place to stay before/after a dayhike?

Don't want to pack this one in...just doing a day hike and it might be dark when I get to that area so I'm hoping to be prepared and know where I'm going which would be a switch.

Sikes,
There really isn't any camping near the east river/allen TH taht is legal
I slept in the car but it sounds like that won't work for you.
The whole area is privately owned and camping is not allowed, although
when I was there someone set up a tent in the parking lot at night and broke down camp early, but I dno't think it is legal.
Sorry this isn't helpful

Lake Harris state campground on Rte 28N near Newcomb.

Not free, but fairly cheap. Plus hot showers.

Depending on the day of the week and how late you get there, I have stealth camped at the Upper Works parking lot just down the road (Past the ghosthouses of George & Sarah). It isn't anything like the whites where you would be rousted from deep slumber and forced out, you'd likely have no one bother you whatsoever

Any place that is in the Forest Preserve, and 150 feet from the road and water should work. If you have it, he ADK map shows private land.

There is no forest preserve land within at least 1 mile of trailhead at Allen, Upper Works, or anywhere along the Upper Works road for that matter. It is all private land - therefore no camping allowed. Do people get camp? Yes. Will you get caught? Probably not.
But is it worth it to save $13 ?!?!???

Ummmm, the State just bought a purchase called the Tahawus tract which includes most of the land up near the end of the Upper Works Trailhead area. I'm not sure if there are any up-to-date maps out there that show the exact new boundary lines but I think the triangle from UW, around the back of Mount Adams, and down to below the Allen TH transfered over to the State. There was talk of the State putting in a couple of roadside sites like they have at South Meadows, Corey's Road, and other select areas up in the region. I occasionally sleep in the back of my pick-up truck at those trailheads. The main concern (as with any campsite) is human waste and there are privy's at both the Allen and UW trailheads. Just practice LNT wherever you camp, and have a great hike, The Sikes!

Sorry, I was looking at the NG map which shows it as private land.

Thanks for all the info...I am not into doing things illegally. That only ruins it for everyone...just wanted to know because I seem to find things out the hard way or after I need it so thought I'd be proactive this time. I will check out the campground recommended and see whats up with them.
