Thanks Doug-I'm afraid Boston is a bit far for the workshop (I'm in CA), but we do get a bit of snow out here in SoCal-plenty up north-for cross country. A good book seems to be worth tracking down for the moment.

There are certainly howto books available.

I'd even wager that one can get lessons in CA. :)
Any/most XC ski area should have them. Just get classic XC lessons, not skate ski lessons.

Yep-that's the plan-get lessons. A few friends are planning a trip to Yosemite for the end of February, so I hope to give it a go there. I know the area and it is easy rolling hills on a closed road so it should be fairly easy to at least figure out the basics with a lesson.
