My wife and I are planning on taking our six-month old daughter on a day hike in the Waterville Valley area. Any suggestions for an easy to moderate hike with not too much elevation gain?

Baby Hikes

Livermore Road is real flat and there is a network of ski trails and side trails to waterfalls...if you stay away from the Trypyramids you can avoid the major elevation in that area. Greeley Ponds is also a nice destination that is very easy with a child...it is shorter to the north pond from the Kanc.

Have fun! :)

There are short side trails to a number of destination off lower Livermore Rd and the south end of the Greely Ponds Tr. Big Pines, etc.

Greely Ponds from the south is fine and avoids the drive around to the Kanc.

I third the trails off the lower Livermore Road. While short and without much elevation gain, some of the trails are rough in places. You can easily push an off-road stroller up the Livermore Road.

The trip to Greeley Ponds doesn't have any rough sections though it's a bit longer. No need to drive around to the Kanc. There are several side trails off the Greeley Pond trail as well, like the Flume trail. I've only been up it in winter so I'm not sure what the footing is like.

The X-C ski trails should also make for some mellow strolls.

Waterville Cascades

Check out Waterville Cascades, one of the most under-appreciated waterfalls in New Hampshire in my opinion. It's a 3.4 mile round trip hike with about 600 feet of total elevation gain. The falls are 18-feet tall and set in a picturesque location.

i'll try to post some good directions later on....

Greeley

One thing to add about the Greeley Ponds...if approaching from the Kanc side there are a few bog bridges. Not a problem to walk over, but would be difficult to impossible to get a stroller over.

Thanks for the info, everybody! We're going to explore Waterville Cascades tomorrow -- the weather should be lovely.

Well, we ended up going to the ER instead -- I have pericarditis (an inflammation of the tissues around the heart). Not life-threatening, but painful. The Cascades will have to wait for another day. Darn!
