Good locations to reflect high NH peaks in water

I'm looking for spots to reflect the above tree-line peaks (say, 4800+ ft) in lakes or ponds. The difficulty I've found in the past is finding bodies of water close enough to the mountains that the mountain still has an impressive size when using a wide angle lens.

I have been to Echo Lake in Franconia Notch, which is good but unfortunately the summit of Lafayette is obscured from that angle. I want to try Durand Lake north of Mt Adams.

Any other suggestions?

Durand is nice. The water was glass until a beaver showed up and started smacking his tail.

Lakes of the Clouds is usually so windy that the water has waves.

Maybe Shoal Pond? Carter Notch?

Can't beat Monadnock in the Fall:

Thing is, you can get a lot closer (from Rt. 124) than most of the 4Ks in the Whites (except maybe Cannon from the lookout pond - but that's too close), and you can get the whole massive plus the pond in. It is, after all a compact peak (Monadnock = "mountain that stands alone" in Abenaki).

Chocorua from Lake Chocorua


If you've got a *really* wide-angle lens, try North Kinsman from Kinsman Pond.

Excellent shots, Jim. You've been without a doubt my favorite landscape photographer since I ran across some of your shots a few years ago. If you ever put out a book like Monkman did, I'd definitely buy it.

Of course, I also find your work terribly depressing because it puts mine to such shame.


As for the question at hand:
Pretty much everything that I'm aware of has been mentioned. Except for Zealand. If the water is still, the ridge is reflected. The last bridge is a good spot to catch it.

There are also some tarns in Carter Notch. The boulder-strewn slope up to Carter Dome should work well with a wide-angle lens, though it's not a very recognizable peak.

And try looking up at Boott Spur or Huntington Ravine from Lost Pond. I recommend early spring to minimize leaves in the way and give you some dramatic snow up high.
