This was my second backpack trip into the Great Gulf in 3 weeks...last time it was snow and winds up at 4000 ft about. Some people kept going and some of us went back to camp to wait for another day.

This was my another day to hike the Great Gulf up to Washington via the Headwall. Jen (Nif) and I hiked in Friday night at our planned on 8:00 turned 9:00pm start...I got out of work late.(always gets in the way)

We arrived at The Bluff fairly quickly...I was hiking with Jen the hiking machine. There were quite a few guys there passing around a nalgene of wine, so of course we had to be sociable and join in. After talking for a while, we found out one of them plays hockey with Woody. It's a small hiking world after all.;)

We started cooling down so off we hiked and arrived at Clam Rock which was deserted so decision was made to make that our basecamp. Set tents up and curled in just as our new buddies arrived to join us. We did inform them that we were in the non-snoring area! :D

Morning came and a little chill in the air..burr but we were toasty warm in our bags. Breakfast & visit with our neighbors and off we headed up the Great Gulf. Bright sunshine warmed us and the views were spectacular. It was a little chilly, as you can tell from the ice on all the water and crunching ground. As we started up the waterfall, it became pretty slick with ice built up on the rocks. After I took one minor slip, ouch we mangaged fine.

There were two guys going up ahead of us that we passed but kept them in view as we continued up and into the rocks. We met a couple Canadians coming down that were in training for Arconcagua. We made it to the top of the Headwall with still bright blue skies and sunshine. Great views all around.
After a little corn chowder, sandwich, choc milk and a social visit with the guys that followed us up the Gulf off we headed. The skies had clouded up and the wind was blowing as we hiked down towards Nelson Crag. We arrived at the Wamsutta trail and down we headed. The trail was really nice, narrow & steep in places but had nice views of the Gulf as we went down. Arrived back at Clam Rock and packed up our tents and gear and out we went. Our plan was to stay in Lincoln so our next day climbing at Rumney would be an easy ride.

Showers and off to dinner, met Arm, Stevo & Rebecca for dinner and watched the Sox(with little naps in between)...
Morning came and off to Rumney for a full day of fun rock climbing. Ran into a few friends at Rumney, Natreb, Carrie & Steve.
Great weekend of multi-sports! :D

Glad you ladies had fun. I am going to make you go back out to the GG with me when we can make a whole weekend of it! Was great to run into you at dinner time in Woodstock. Thanks for offering up your tv (and couch) for Sox viewing (I think I caught one or two pitches...then it was all zzzzs).

Wamsutta is a great trail! We used it for descent for a day trip up thru the GG, to the summit of W, then Nelson Crag and linked to Wamsutta for the trip back to GG Trail. It was a long summer day, Wamsutta can truly exhaust your muscles when going down but it was just as scenic, as you mentioned, to make up for it.
Nive TR & pics!

Beautiful! Next time I'm in the Gulf, I'm definitely going to head up this route, at least to Spaulding Lake. And I'll recommend for your next time, if you want something different, to head up the Buttress Trail.

Glad you got your 'another day'. :D

I'll check out the pics and see what views I missed on the way up last time!

The Buttress Trail & Sphinx are on my radar for another GG trip real soon..it seems to be my second home ;)lately......you have to do the GG trail and Spaulding Lake is a tease...got to go above it and look back!! :D

Any dalmations near the top of the headwall

You were better off waiting and getting views - it was cool when we went up to be back in snow and ice for a bit - the gulf is best enjoyed with views and less than 50mph winds.

hiking in less than 50 m.p.h winds? i don't comprehend..

darl, i shoulda convinced you to keep going the other weekend, then you coulda gotten the best of both worlds!

Awesome photos Darl!!! Too bad we missed you guys Saturday night - we were busy stuffing our faces with pizza and wings.

Nice pics Darlene,

As you can see I'm now a registered member thanks to you know who.

I'll have to give rock climbing a try one day. You see, I've been hiking a lot for the last 2 years or so but I still consider myself a beginner. One of the reason I started hiking was to get rid of my fear of heights (it worked) and I think I'll soon be confident enough to try something more challenging.

Yes it's me! It's nice to write freely on this forum after one year not being able to do nothing else but read and post on trail conditions! Might get to hike with you guys one day, I hope. I don't have a car so I only go to NH once in a while....

I was at the hockey rink tonight and was talking to my friend Joe and he told me he met two girls in at the Bluff that know me. It is certainly a small world. I hiked with Joe as he finished his White Mountain 4K footers on Hale a few years ago and I have down some ice climbing with him as well. He said it was nice to meet Jen and Darlene!

Sounds like you had another great hike!

Woody
