Has anyone hiked the Greenleaf or Skookumchuck Trails recently? Just curious about the trail conditions.

Thanks!

What is the derivation of the term 'Skookumchuck' in NH?? In some Indian cultures, it refers to bigfoot.

Any ideas??

From "Place Names of the White Mountains: by Robert and Mary Julyan:

"This name is analogous to a glacial "erratic," appearing out of context far from its origional place of origin. The name is derived from jargon of the Chinook Indians of the Pacific Northwest, and it means "dashing water" or "rapids." The brook heads on the North side of Garfield Ridge and flows Northwest."

Seems strange the that this specific area would be dominantly classified by a term such as 'glacial erratic" (strange boulders), and further by a Western culture (Pac-NW) that would preempt or over-ride NE history.

Greenleaf from the hut to Lafayette tonight was pretty messy - lots of slush and running water with drifted new snow.

No more strange than naming 4000 foot peaks after prominent Native Americans who never lived near, nor set foot on their namesakes. :D

Took Greenleaf Trail up to the ridge on Saturday 4/25. Trail was dry with only periodic icy spots up to Eagle Pass or about 3000'. After that there was plenty of snow. We carried snowshoes and mspikes but never used them on this trail. As mentioned elsewhere, really wet climb up to Lafayette from the hut.
