I knew that I only had about a half-day to hike today before the rain hit. So, it seemed only appropriate to take the Nancy Pond Trail for about 0.3 mile and then bushwhack about half-way up the Halfway Brook!.
What attracted me to whacking up the Halfway Brook were tightly compacted contour lines on the topographic map about half-way up this brook. This indicated to me that there might be a waterfall in this area. I'm not patting myself on the back, but my hunch paid off. There is indeed an impressive waterfall at this location!
The photos below show some snapshots of this picturesque waterfall. They were taken from slightly different vantage points. The falls are huge, and I was unable to find a single vantage point to capture it in its entirety.
In addition to the huge waterfall shown in the two snapshots above, there were other smaller falls at other points along the brook (such as the one shown below).
Painted trilliums were the only wildflowers that were seen on this trek. Everyone knows what they look like, but nonetheless, here's a photo of one that was seen en route to the waterfalls on Halfway Brook.
This was a very easy and pleasant whack through open hardwoods. It was also a short trek (less than a mile off-trail), which turned out to be a good thing. The weather folks were "spot on" with their forecast (for once!). It was supposed to start raining around noon in the Bartlett area, and sure enough it did! Fortunately, I was only about 10 minutes from the car when the rain hit.
