I knew that I only had about a half-day to hike today before the rain hit. So, it seemed only appropriate to take the Nancy Pond Trail for about 0.3 mile and then bushwhack about half-way up the Halfway Brook!.

What attracted me to whacking up the Halfway Brook were tightly compacted contour lines on the topographic map about half-way up this brook. This indicated to me that there might be a waterfall in this area. I'm not patting myself on the back, but my hunch paid off. There is indeed an impressive waterfall at this location!

The photos below show some snapshots of this picturesque waterfall. They were taken from slightly different vantage points. The falls are huge, and I was unable to find a single vantage point to capture it in its entirety.

In addition to the huge waterfall shown in the two snapshots above, there were other smaller falls at other points along the brook (such as the one shown below).

Painted trilliums were the only wildflowers that were seen on this trek. Everyone knows what they look like, but nonetheless, here's a photo of one that was seen en route to the waterfalls on Halfway Brook.

This was a very easy and pleasant whack through open hardwoods. It was also a short trek (less than a mile off-trail), which turned out to be a good thing. The weather folks were "spot on" with their forecast (for once!;)). It was supposed to start raining around noon in the Bartlett area, and sure enough it did! Fortunately, I was only about 10 minutes from the car when the rain hit.

Beautiful waterfall John! It is nice to see that spring is returning to the White Mtns. :)
Thanks for your response Phil. That H20 falls was pretty impressive. I tried to get a snapshot from the top looking down the falls. However, I couldn't find a spot to do this where I felt safe. One misstep and I would not have been 1HappyHiker! Below is the best shot from the top that I could get. Admittedly, it's difficult to get any true perspective from this photo.

That looks like a great waterfall! Nice photos. I'd been wondering the same about Davis brook but haven't gotten out there. Thank you for sharing this! :)

Thanks for that link, roadtripper! And now I am incredibly jealous of the rest of Harry Lichtman's photos on that site - wow!

So as not to stray too far OT.... it is good to have these reports to show that there are still some great spots to visit that are not accessible by trail, even in place as popular as Crawford Notch.

At the moment, I'm in New Brunswick, CANADA enjoying a different type of H20 view (photo below), but I agree with Chris (NeoAkela) that I'm incredibly jealous of Harry Lichtman's photos!

Roadtripper: I also thank you for that link and I agree with Chris that it's great that there are still wonderful spots to visit in the Crawford Notch area that are not accessible by trail, such as the waterfalls up on the Halfway Brook.
