Had a great X-C tour last week with gorgeous weather and TONS of snow still on the ground.
Went from hairpin turn on the Kanc up Hancock Notch Trail to height of land. Still 5+ feet of snow on the ground there (I wish I could post the pics I have of the snow depth -crazy!!) and blazes are generally completely under snow.
4-6" of new snow on top of firm base allowed us to ski ultra skinny skiis on the surface all the way out of the notch down to junction for Sawyer pond trail cut off and avoid the last couple of stream crossings (BTW- last 3 are open water). Tied into Sawyer (Run??) trail and headed south towards Meadow Brook and Nanomachuck ski trail (shared with snowchine trail). then joined Nanomachuck trail, headed east to Church pond junction. On to our crossing of the Swift R. to get to our dropped car at the Downes Brook Trailhead. I had brought waders in my pack for crossing the Swift, but we were able to split the flow of the river by crossing 3 braids just upstream of the campground.
Conditions are EXCELLENT for touring right now. no need to stay on trails almost everything is accessable as the veg. is all buried under the snow. Get out there and enjoy it!
