Record wind recorded 71 years ago
MOUNT WASHINGTON, N.H. (AP) — The wind is relatively civil atop New Hampshire’s Mount Washington, New England’s highest point — unlike 71 years ago Tuesday.
During an intense storm in 1934 five men anxiously awaiting spring witnessed a ferocity of nature that is yet to be duplicated — the world’s highest recorded wind speed.
When Salvatore Pagluica took several readings above 220 mph, he knew he was part of something special. Then, at 1:21 p.m., a wind gust of 231 mph an hour was recorded.
He wrote in his log: “Will they believe it?” Later measurements confirmed everything was working properly.
Although challenged by 1997’s Typhoon Paka in Guam, Mount Washington’s world record stands to this day.
