The participants: Paradox (and Zippy!), Henry, King Tut, Drewski and me.

Paradox and I had arrived at BBQ headquarters on Thursday night and were joined on Friday morning first by Henry and then by Drew to start the hike. We headed out from the Garden around 8:30 and made steady progress to JBL and then Slant Rock. Somewhere between the two King Tut had caught up to our group and would be with us the rest of the day. At first I thought I had met a fellow midwesterner, what with the Chicago Cubs shirt and hat he was sporting...but no. However, his girlfriend and I did go to the same college. But I digress...

We finally started climbing in earnest and topped out on the summit of Little Haystack and got our first taste of the fantasic views we were in for. The climb down and then up to the summit of Haystack went fairly quickly (and included a quick visit with Pete Hickey) and once there we took time to soak in the views and have some lunch.

Our next stop was Basin, so we retraced our steps back over Little Haystack to the junction and headed over. The next thing we knew we were on top of Basin. I did a quick scouting trip to check out the situation getting over to Saddleback - one little PUD, and then the climb up with that fun looking scramble:eek:. The group was all in agreement that we would continue on, and so we headed down.

I had known from reading other trip reports that the descent from Basin would be steep and potentially slick. Thank goodness the weather has been dry, since it was dicey indeed. Down down we go, then up over the bump and then down a little more and then up. I was looking forward to getting to the cliffs, so hurried right along. When I got there and started climbing, I immediately wondered how Zippy was going to get up to the top:confused::confused:. Matt and I hung out waiting to see if man or dog could use some assistance. John and Henry took Zippy on a little bushwhack to the right to avoid the lower section of the scramble. After that there wasn't much choice but to follow the markers... Slowly but surely (and with a few pushes and pulls and, I assume, lots of promises of the doggy equivalent of ice cream) Zippy made it up to the top. There was joy! There was relief! There was the realization that we still had several miles to go to finish the hike and time was a-wasting... So we headed down to Ore Bed Brook and then to JBL again to get more water and then out to the cars. A long but rewarding day! Very nice to have met John, Henry and Matt.

Nice one Rebecca!

.....and you did all that the day before what we did on Saturday?!? ;) That's pretty rad!
I'm looking forward to your Macintyre report.

Great Photos and TR. Zippy, and I had a great time hiking with you, Matt, and Drew. Ishmael (Henry) and I were very impressed with the hiking toughness of this crew. Matt, sorry about calling you "Mike" all day.

Just some notes on going to the right to avoid much of the rock scramble on the West of Saddleback. A herd path to the right, that presses you between trees and the rock face, at the start of the scramble takes you up about 100 feet. You eventually come to a chimney that I could have scrambled up but the dog was not going there. Drew found that the herd path takes a hairpin turn at this point to the left. We decended about 20' and back to a scramble that we were able to pass Zippy up to some rock platforms and eventually get up the remaining 60' of vertical.

Cool trip, a lot of those shots look somewhat familiar!

One of my favorite trips in the ADKs, at least Haystack is such a nice peak, pretty much a beautiful trip, no matter how you approach it.

Did you enjoy that big huge rock on the ore bed trail, It just looks so out of place among the forest, but it's cool. (it also is a place I always tend to go for a pee... :) )

Yes, that is Slant Rock and we found another slant rock on the Beaver Meadow trail off the Gothics/Armstrong col.

Nice last picture, was that coming down off ore bed? There should always be a bloody shot on every trip!

Amazing area!! Nothing disappoints. Even the woods between the peaks are gorgeous.

Those are three beautiful peaks!!! Glad that you had a nice day to enjoy them. I'm never disappointed with the views of Panther Gorge from Haystack...simply breathtaking!!!

Great pictures Rebecca.....thanks for the Marshall picture! I still don't think of it fondly... I will have to hike it again someday so I can actually enjoy it!!!

Looks like a great day and nice hiking...have to get back over there!! Lots different than in the winter!!

Sweet pics, glad you had such a great day for an awesome hike!

Nice report Rebecca! I had a blast doing this hike, and felt honored that Paradox called me by my middle name, Michael, even though i had not told him this. No worries. My day started around 6 a.m. in Burlington when i awoke, drove a few hours to the trailhead, and got powered up with a couple of sausage, egg, and cheese biscuits and coffee from Burger King. Somehow, Drewski recognized me when i was hiking up to him on the trail, which shocked me that anyone had actually ever read any of my mindless drivel on this site and seen my picture. It was a sweet hike, with some unexpected rock climbs and scrambling. I have a new found respect for Zippy, the super climbing alpine dog! Here are a few pics from the hike....

Proof that I am dating into the Cubs fan base after the recent Red Sox meltdown in New York
