After an excellent night Cinco de Mayo-ing with friends a little (i.e. easy) Sunday hangover hike was in order. Nancy, Spongebob and I headed down to Haystack Mtn. near Wilmington, VT and headed up. Lots of blow downs and a heavily eroded trail which was more like a mini swamp were the only notable "obstacles".
There were a handful of people at the top when we arrived, but since Spongebob was with us, they quickly cleared out and we had the place to ourselves. (thank you, SB) The weather was perfect, the sky was beautiful, we could hear a chorus of frogs from the pond below. The view was pretty fantastic. Greylock in MA, Monadnock in NH, the windmills in Searsburg, Mt. Ascutney, and yes...way, way, way in the distance the snowy top of Washington was visible!
We lounged on the rocks soaking up the views and the sun for more than an hour. After a winter of hurrying off of summits due to wind/cold/no views and the impending bug season that will cause the same desire to keep on moving it felt like a Cinco de Mayo miracle to spend all that time sitting quietly with friends and a VFtT.
