Crazy Bob and I planned another double hike this past weekend, Hale in the morning and Tecumseh in the afternoon. We met up with Sam, Kate, & James at the Little River Road, geared up, and headed out. Is it just me or is the first gate you encounter just off the parking lot, not easy to climb under or over? We made good time over to Haystack and on to the trailhead. We had done some research on the Fire Wardens trail and I had someone's GPS track to follow so we were pretty confident we would find it. Sure enough, as I was leading and we got there, I walked right past it. Bob alerted me and we made the turn and started up. This is a pretty trail, love all the birch trees.
The trail is pretty easy to follow, there were still some tracks from previous visitors. Eventually I popped out of the woods at the summit nearly at the same moment as another gentleman who had come up Lend A Hand trail from the hut. Our gang plus one-
We spent a little time on the summit taking in the magnificant views and getting some celebratory shots-
A large group arrived via the Lend A Hand so with the summit getting crowded, we decided to head down. Pretty uneventful trip down and we finished up in just about 4 1/2 hours. We all bare booted the whole way for this leg of our double hit.
Now for a drive over to Waterville Valley. Chance to have some lunch, dry out, warm up, and get a little stiff.
Found a spot at the busiest trailhead parking lot in the Whites
Off we went, made the first water crossing and started our climb. We were all still barebooting but when we made the first turn at the sign post, I decided to put on my snow shoes just for the tel-evators. They worked well on this stretch as it just goes up, up, and then up. Made it to the summit, got some pics and checked out the views.
After a short break we headed down. I gave up the lead and the gang took off ahead of me. Bob and Kate decided they would run for a bit, not having got enough excercise so far this day
We all re grouped back at the parking lot, geared down, and said our good byes. Bob and I had a good ride home. Great day and plenty of list checkmarks for all of us.
