For the trip to Italy last year, I made a case for them out of PVC pipe with one glued on end cap and one screw on end cap.

Thank you all. I rooted around in my growing collection of hiking poles, found one that broke down into three sections, worked it into the bottom of a suitcase, checked the suitcase, and had no problem on the domestic flight, not even a TSA "calling card" when I picked up the bag. Darren, I have one of those DIY PVC pipe cases (unfortunately, on loan right now) too. It was originally made for fishing poles. Next time I'll retrieve it before flight time.

Just came back from a few weeks in England and no issues with my poles in my checked luggage either there or back. My wife did get a TSA inspection card, I got nothing.

I always check them and it works. Carrying them on after 9/11 would be viewed IMHO as a potential weapon by the FAA. G'Luck
