MMMMMmmmmmm

When it gets real cold, I like to fill a couple of nalgene bottles up with boiling water and stick'em in my bag. Keeps you warm for a good 3 or 4 hours.

Anyone else ever give it a try?

Lexan
I usually put one in the foot of my my sleeping bag (Lexan only) about an hour or so before I turn in. Makes for a nicer night and also I have something to sip on at 4AM when my throat is dry, as well as water that will boil quickly for coffee and oatmeal in the morning !!!!!

I've never tried it camping. But on a winter visit to Italy a few years ago, I learned that they do that there. It works - and it usually stays warm all through the night. I just try to remember to make sure and close it tightly - otherwise you get water all over and the spilled water gets cold really fast.

I fill 'em with hot, but not boiling water. I've heard that certain Nalgene products will warp with boiling water, resulting in a leak. No brain cells left to remember which type of Nalgene is OK, so I just don't boil.

Rick's got it right, though I save it for the last thing I do before I get in my bag. And it absolutely beats melting snow or chipping a hole in the stream for that morning coffee.

Rico,

The white Nalgene bottles (high density polyethylene) will warp and do funny things with really hot water.

The lexan (smoky, or clear) bottles are fine with the hottest of water. They won't break when water freezes inside them either (I'm sure someone will have a story to the contrary, but in general, they do fine with ice).

be careful

Yes, i agree with all comments, especially the last one. I usually heat the water a few minutes before turning in. It is a nice luxury to have that in the bag.

As far as confusing it with the pee bottle, ALWAYS use different shaped bottles, and make one shape consistantly the waste bottle.

Just some advice. Not learned the hard way fortunately.

I agree with all the comments as well (especially the pee bottle thing). Just one suggestion to add. Put the bottle with hot water in your socks. The heat dispersion will be more moderate and will keep the bottle warmer longer. In addition it cushions the blow if you bump it in your bag. Plus, touching the hot bottle directly will certainly get your attention.

Putting the water bottle between the legs (near the groin) on the femoral artery will keep you warm as well. Ive tried it on the feet but it doesnt seem to keep me quite as comfy as the femoral artery...
