I'm interested to see how many people here are working on the officially unofficial list of New England 3000 footers. Who are the bushwhackers here?

Are there 451 now? When Pat and I started around 1990, there were 452, and then the other main summit of Huntington was added, but then I think Middle Kennebago Divide had been on the list but fell off...oh well.

We're not actively pursuing them that much any more - too many other things to do!

With all the variations of the list, I think I am now at about 476 of them, but I do still enjoy bushwacking so it's still fun for me. I like the less crowded peaks, you know those that get visited every 2 or 3 years!

248/451

I've been focusing on the Maine 3K peaks first, 141 of 165.
Overall I'm at 248 of 451.

'whack-on

(ps whackfest-more is around the corner!)

When and where is this upcoming whackfest?

Later this Spring. No definite plans other than whackfest-too was such a blast, as was whackfest-tree, so it's time to start thinking about doing it again. It will either be at the Roadhouse in Stratton, or, I've been floating the idea of setting up a large tarp and screen house, hauling in a BBQ Grill and firewood, and having it out in the Beaudry! Time will tell.

Enough of this... I planted a seed. I don't want to hijack this thread.

This thread discriminates against those of us who have done some ADK and Catskill 3Ks. I demand redress.

Vt 104
NH 110 or so
ME 71 or so
ADK 64
Cat 13
MA 0
PA 0

I'm closest to finishing MA where I have just 2 to go. Running a little behind in the Catskills.

I think I have about 75-80 done. Living in Colorado for a while stole some of my peak years, though; now I have bad knees. I would easily have 85 otherwise! ;)

Weird timing on this. I was curious a couple days ago, so I looked thru the list and added them up. I'm not necessarily pursuing this at this time (doubtful I'd ever go to Maine that often), but I check things off as I go.

ps
I think the catergories are a little too broad esp. in the middle. The reason I say so is that I am at 100, but I'm certainly not an "avid" bushwhacker. This will change this summer, assuming I finish the NEHH.

Steve is right - 100-to-350 covers a lot of ground and admits of wide variation in avidity. I checked that box because I'm over 100, but am only a semi-avid 'whacker. (Thickness of spruce and blowdowns and my avidity are inversely proportional.) And Steve - you will complete the NEHH in '07!

I agree, Steve... I wanted to make one for 100-200 and another for 200-350, the former being "moose-in-training" and the latter being "avid bushwhacker". I was just half asleep last night and picked the default 4 category poll. My bad!

I can't wait for whackfest-more. Will there be counselors available or has the medical community already written us off as too far gone? :D

As for myself, I'm at 133 total. I also have at least 45 peaks with official trails that I know of remaining, but I have a lot of research on Maine and VT left to do.

I read that 225 of the peaks have trails but I can't find many of them on topozone. Is the general consensus that that website's trail markings are quite out of date?

"Moose in Training" = 142
ME- 84
NH- 30
VT- 27
MA- 1

I thought I was going to finish the Maine peaks first but much of NH is closer with a lot of trailed peaks I have not yet done.
Great thread!

Topozone maps are based on USGS many of which date from the 1970s, some trails have been deleted since then and some added

You beat me to it Dennis, I still think of there being 455 although that hasn't been the accepted figure for a long time.

But there's one peak we're both missing (although a couple here have done it) that was on the 1931 list of 4k peaks, this was a private discussion on ROT

Well Roy let me know when you are going! I'd be happy to join you if you want some company! ;)

The categories should really start at 101, saince doing the NEHH is often a tune-up for serious bushwhacking. I think most people think of the number of 3Ks they have done are those in excess of the HH list. In other words 100 peaks is like the starting point.

Of course there will always be some crazy who decides to do them from lowest to highest, or perhaps by increasing longitude or latitude. Obsessive-compulsive behavior such as 3K bagging often knows no bounds :)

BTW: I'm 100% (2 for 2) in Massachusetts. (Went to Williams College - climbed them 40 odd years ago.)

I've hiked all my life, started the count in Nov/01.I'm at 243/454 so far. Some combo day hikes with Post'r and other wackers, :) like Round ,E .Round,Corporation/Millen,Darmouth,Deception/Hutchins,Pilots Range/ were just as exciting to me as any combo 4Kr hikes. One time we did Unnamed Readsboro,Hoosac, and Houghton in a day. Those who have hiked these know they are easy ,but going there and cruisin' the back roads and meetin locals and checking out the forest conditions is what makes the 3kr's a great experience for me!! Can't wait to get to the Beaudry and do a bunch of em'!!
