Where is a good place to start practicing self-arrest in the Whites? I was thinking about a good steep ski slope, but I don't think Wildcat wants that...just looking for a place that is steep enough to practice, but generally safe as well. Any ideas? Thanks.

I searched the forums already and came up empty.

Willey's slide. But stay low until you get good at it! :D
It has been a long time since I have been on Willey's slide, but IIRC the runout can be bad (rocks and woods). (Falling climbers have shot into the woods below.) Make sure that you choose a spot where if you don't arrest, you will come to a safe stop. Otherwise, belay with a rope (requires the help of an ice climber and ice/snow protection gear to set up properly).

The best spots have a smooth snow crust to slide on and a lesser grade (or soft snow) below on which you can come to a gradual stop. And no rocks or trees etc to hit.

Sometimes the Little Headwall in Tuckerman and the floor of Huntington's Ravine are good. HR has enough rocks that you may need to belay. (Both of these areas are subject to avalanche--check the reports and wait for low before going.)

Thanks everyone...

...headed out to a sled hill near me first, then out up Noth!

Not to be a prude but becarefull at Willeys. If there are any climbers on it dont hang out below them or you could catch ice they knock off while they climb and yes they will knock some off. Id find a better place then that.
