I just checked the canister at the end of my driveway. It has been in place since August of 2009. The paper in the spiral bound pad is bone dry, in spite of the fact that the plastic bag had been left open by the last registrant (October of 2010.) Everything is in good order.
MarcHowes sent some pictures of the register I placed at the summit of COP Snow and the hinge had been blown out and the contents gone after about a year.
In November I checked on the register I had placed on the summit of Mount Prospect in Holderness NH. It had had 16 registrants in about 6 months. The hinge was in working order, perhaps because I had labeled the door "Open Here".
In my opinion it is a workable system. I just need to add a polyester webbing strap as a hinge. It will make the opening action of the door a little more obvious to the uninitiated.
