..I'm Mr. Sun.

Well, it was certainly a nice sunny day saturday when a few of us hiked Storm King Mtn, just south of Newburgh, NY, a bunch of loops by North Point and then down towards the southern part of the park. Apparently, the bridge that was out must of been fixed because the last time I was there (in 2006) there were signs all over indicating some bridge was out. A pretty nice day, was a bit windy at the start and we did a nice 12ish mile hike with great views overlooking the Hudson and Breakneck Ridge. Then MattC and I did a side trip to whack on some old woods roads as on the map and would up at some old homestead right on the hudson, complete with woods road leading to it with some really cool stonework that was used to drain water from washing out the roads and some usual stone ruins that we walked through. A very nice hike on a nice fall day, we did a little birdwatching and duck watching and even train watching and since there was an Army-Air Force football game going on in West Point, army Helicopters were flying around all day!!! Army, lost though, 16-9 I would later find out.

One of my favorite Hudson Valley hikes! Closely followed by the Breakneck Ridge/Sugarloaf loop -- which offers those close up and personal veiws of Storm King!

Bull Hill (Mount Taurus) is a very nice hike too. Last Spring a buddy of mine and I climbed Bull Hill and descended into the valley with all the Cornish ruins. We made our way back towards the Hudson River just as the sun was setting, which I mentioned to my friend, looked "like a river of gold." My friend, who is somewhat of a city slicker responded, "you mean black gold?"

I had my pair of pocket binoculars and we could watch the throngs of folks scaling breakneck's walls and the flag was flowing on the first ledge you get to.

You guys should of seen Reeve's meadow's visitor center in Harriman on Sunday, I left the park around 1:30pm and the cars were insane parked going up the hill just north of the visitor's center... there must of been like 100 cars in the 2 lots and overflowing on both sides of the road. (<Insert Crazy Eddie Antar voice>Insane!!!!!!</End Crazy Eddie Antar voice> :p)

Hey - nice photos. You found some cool stuff in the woods - very nice. Down by The Hook, I used to find all kinds of stuff - I remember an old chicken coop we'd play on/around, and an old boat we used to climb around on. And abandoned park buildings - old out-of-use "comfort stations". There is nothing like NYS public building construction of the past century - even the ruins are impressive.

Thanks for the Crazy Eddie reference - I had almost deleted that file from my brain - what a blast from the past!

He started this big consumer electronics store (like say before Best Buy and Circuit city) and then got in huge trouble, violating federal securities laws and was sent to prison and his store liquidated and belly up. Used to be around the NYC metro area in the 80s...

His television ads at the time were basically of himself promoting his store and his prices as being 'Insaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeee', such that is was a famous catch-phrase for him and his store...

More info on the homestead we found on the shore of the Hudson in this link...
