Is there a discussion here? For the life of me, I'm having a difficult time figuring out the purpose of this thread or its appropriateness for this forum.
I think it serves as a reminder that these canisters once placed become basically a public platform and that you may want to think twice about what your writing before signing your name to it.

I think it's good for VFTT that this thread has remained open. Not all threads have to be so tightly focused that they squeak.

And, what's good for VFTT is surely good for the world and the universe.

Now, let me tell you about my cat Elvis....

This "problem" has been prevented from happening in the Adirondacks.

Why? (Choose one)

  • ADK whackers are illiterate.
  • It is illegal to write in cannisters.
  • Cannisters are illegal.
  • It is illegal to place a notebook and/or a pen or pencil in an ADK cannister.
  • No one bushwhacks in the Adirondacks.
  • No one would care enough to start a thread on the topic.
  • Some of the above.

Really? This is a discussion? I want my minute back that i just spent reading this thread. I will never get it back. I just turned 30, my time is precious, the clock is ticking for me. That is upsetting.

Neil's post made this minute worthwhile. Although, really, that kind of Adirondack attitude has no place on a serious website.

Was it done maliciously or as a joke? Either way, it doesn't belong in a canister. *thumbs down*

I agree that is doesn't belong in a canister because it doesn't relate to the peak

At least one well-known NE peakbagger is openly gay (and during the AIDS scare some people refused to shake hands with him at a 4k club meeting) and would consider it insulting to think that being called gay is insulting :-(

Shame on whoever wrote it, unless they have a good reason I can't fathom

Not that I am defending the comment in the cannister, but why does everything have to ONLY relate to the peak? I rather enjoy flipping through a register and finding SPongeBob's stickers and laced throughout. Or, if you have visited Whitewall lately there is a joke item placed inside that gives one a good chuckle. Not everything has to be serious.....

Thanks Neil, your post confirms to me that when I go to the ADK's annually, that the signs on Redfield & the one helping us tourist get to Allen are indeed for the tourist since the locals can't read!:D

Now I can tell my wife the 100's of sign pictures are not a waste of film. (now computer space) The signs are meant for the flatlanders.

As far as the crux of the post, private jokes are great fun when they can be kept private. A cannister can be read by anyone & some readers may not see the humor (hopefully) that the initial remarks were intended to be in.

IMO, Comments like that don't really belong in a cannister or a Geo-cache either.

I don't this thread is going to achieve anything further besides creating animosity. If you have problems with my decision to close this thread please contact me or Darren directly.
