Why is it at 4,675' Mount Height does not qualify as a 4,000 footer for peak baggers?

Mt Height does not meet the requirement of having a 200' col on both sides seperating it from a taller neighbor. The holds true for Guyot (4580'), Little Haystack (4780'), Frankilin (5001') and Clay (5533'), among other crags and subpeaks (see Adams).

It doesn't rise 200 ft above the col (low point) connecting it to a higher neighbor, in this case Carter Dome.

It does, it just depends on which list you use. Or, you could just forgot the lists completely and hike it if you'd like. There's no penalty, and the views are incredible.

it's on the trailwrights list!!
all mountains count if you want them to.
it's got a great view too!! :D

This list shows quite a bit of the 4000'ers that aren't on the NH48. It also disputes a few that are (Guyot is included, South Hancock is not). Mt. Hight is between #18 and #19.

I agree with Post'r Boy! Make up your own list! They all count!

I agree that it's definately worth visiting! Climb everything!!! :D

I'm currently working on the "Mountain I Haven't Climbed and Moutains I Have Climbed" list. Height is on there!

BTW, please do not ask me for a copy of this list. I don't have it in an electronic format at this time. ;)

In my most humble of opinions, MT. Height is the best peak in the Carter Range.
One of the best reason's for finishing the standard 4k's, is that your then free to climb mountains for the best reason, because you want to. :D

I completely agree. Mt. Hight has the best views of the entire Carter-Moriah Range. The views of the Presies, Baldface, Mahoosucs, and on into Maine are incomparable.

Ayuh! Mt. Hight has a magnificent summit, exposed and expansive, and surprisingly quiet because it is not on the 4k list, but very close to summits that are, and there is a spur path to the summit. So peakbaggers usually go around the summit because it doesn't count, which is a blessing. :)

view from Mt. Hight

Happy Trails!

Wouldn't ... every ... mountain be on that list?
;)

Mt Hight is an excellent mountain - I think everyone has pretty much answered that. I'll throw in one tidbit about winter: the col between Carter Dome and Mt. Hight is a serious snow collector. Expect snow drifts in the 6'-12' range, right over the top of the trail. Step the wrong way in either direction and it's all spruce traps.

It's do-able, and I intend to return sometime and actually make it up there, but if you don't know the geography (ie, "the trail should be *here* and going *there*") it could be iffy, and it will certainly be slow and very risky for a solo.

Mt. Height is so far the only mountain that I've hiked up to in the dark to see the sunrise from the top--and wow, talk about views from the top! I highly recommend seeing the sunrise or sunset from this mountain--it is an experience I will never forget.

There is a reasonable amount of winter traffic up to Mt. Height and Carter Dome, so it is likely to be broken out. The trail isn't hard to follow. It is also protected up to the ridge between the two peaks. If you are comfortable with winter soloing, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Not when I was there. There really were drifts in the 8'-11' range going right up over the trail and the surrounding scrub, and it was completely unbroken. I'd say that if there's a weekday snow or windstorm, don't be the first ones up on Saturday. Wait for Sunday so that us fools have broken it out already. :)

Obviously someone has to be first after every snowstorm...

When I was there, the direct route to Mt Height was broken--we had easy breaking up Carter Dome Tr and on the ridge back to Mt Height. (We skipped Carter Dome.) There had been a reasonable number of people ahead of us. Quite a few had gone to Zeta Pass and headed north.

If it isn't broken, it might be easier to take the AT directly up to Mt Height--steeper, but fewer opportunities for drifts.

I'd say that on many of the 4K's if there was a weekday storm & you go Sunday, you could probably get by without taking your snowshoes off your pack.

Sunday hikers, smart or lazy?????? If solo, I'm leaning towards smart, if you're a group of 5+, thinking lazy. (Besides the obvious, the schedules did not allow a Saturday hike to help break trail.)

Hight is one of my all-time favorites now. Such an under-rated peak!!! Carter Dome drew me to that area, but Hight was SO much better than CDome. CDome may count towards the "lists", but I'll never care to peak that one again compared to Hight which will draw me back. Silly that Hight isn't on that list. But those are the rules. Those same rules is what makes Hight to under-rated since people miss it. Hight is one of the best peaks in the Whites.
