"We have always found the Irish a bit odd. They refuse to be English."
- Winston Churchill
Spent the last 2.5 weeks in Ireland. Visited for a family first communion and did the ole vist family in Dublin area for a couple of days - hit the local pub or 2 for a few good guinness - yum.
Did some hiking in County Westmeath - (Fore Valley) , County Fermanagh/Northen Ireland (Cuilcagh) and finally hit the the 2 highest peaks (Carrauntoohil & Beenkeragh) in Ireland in County Kerry. Also did some hiking with my wife and son in the Gap of Dunloe in Kerry, right outside of Killarney as well as some easy hiking in the Killarney National Park and Muckross.
We walked right by Ray Bourque (Bruins) in Killarney - he was getting out of a private bus with his golf clubs in front a very nice hotel.
Great time - rained one day while we were there - we very very lucky with that.
Was also able to do some great running in County Cavan where I was staying for most of the time. It was pretty cool to be running by old church ruins, sheep and 100's of cows and bulls while having the locals driving tractors down the small streets waving at ya.
Pretty easy hiking for the most part - though the peaks are more rugged than their modest height (about 3000ft) would indicate. There are real knife edges and some class 3 scrambles on the easy routes. There are certainly some no fall zones on the ridge b/t Carrauntoohil & Beenkeragh. The knife edge is no more than a foot or 2 wide in places with 1000 foot drops on both sides.. The ridge walk goes around some aretes so some basic routefinding is needed - Great stuff!!
There are no trees on the peaks - so the views are great right from the car -
I "bogwhacked" my way down after coming down Beenkeragh over another small hill and back to the main trail.
Pix should tell the story - as always Ireland is a great place to visit. Dublin is the size of Boston with the hussle of NYC (which is fun as well) - but once your out in the countryside, things move nice and slow and its a great place to relax and unwind with great people.
Those who know me, have heard me say it before, but Ireland is a great place to visit - I recomend it to everyone. Lots of history, lots of scenary lots of pints. .
