"We have always found the Irish a bit odd. They refuse to be English."
- Winston Churchill

Spent the last 2.5 weeks in Ireland. Visited for a family first communion and did the ole vist family in Dublin area for a couple of days - hit the local pub or 2 for a few good guinness - yum.

Did some hiking in County Westmeath - (Fore Valley) , County Fermanagh/Northen Ireland (Cuilcagh) and finally hit the the 2 highest peaks (Carrauntoohil & Beenkeragh) in Ireland in County Kerry. Also did some hiking with my wife and son in the Gap of Dunloe in Kerry, right outside of Killarney as well as some easy hiking in the Killarney National Park and Muckross.

We walked right by Ray Bourque (Bruins) in Killarney - he was getting out of a private bus with his golf clubs in front a very nice hotel. :)

Great time - rained one day while we were there - we very very lucky with that.

Was also able to do some great running in County Cavan where I was staying for most of the time. It was pretty cool to be running by old church ruins, sheep and 100's of cows and bulls while having the locals driving tractors down the small streets waving at ya.

Pretty easy hiking for the most part - though the peaks are more rugged than their modest height (about 3000ft) would indicate. There are real knife edges and some class 3 scrambles on the easy routes. There are certainly some no fall zones on the ridge b/t Carrauntoohil & Beenkeragh. The knife edge is no more than a foot or 2 wide in places with 1000 foot drops on both sides..  The ridge walk goes around some aretes so some basic routefinding is needed - Great stuff!! :D

There are no trees on the peaks - so the views are great right from the car -
I "bogwhacked" my way down after coming down Beenkeragh over another small hill and back to the main trail.

Pix should tell the story - as always Ireland is a great place to visit. Dublin is the size of Boston with the hussle of NYC (which is fun as well) - but once your out in the countryside, things move nice and slow and its a great place to relax and unwind with great people.

Those who know me, have heard me say it before, but Ireland is a great place to visit - I recomend it to everyone. Lots of history, lots of scenary lots of pints. :) .

Giggy,

Looks like you had a great time. Conor looks like he's getting big.
Those ridges in the Reeks are quite a site! The Devil's Ladder is a nice little scramble. You get to the top of the ridge and there are sheep grazing up there! The added objective hazard is to avoid stepping the sheep droppings. :p

Thanks for posting some great pics

Wow Giggy,

Nice pix, Conor is getting so big, seems like you were just telling us he was born... :)

Sounds like you had some great hiking and walking, nice!

Now I have to add Ireland to the lengthening list of places I MUST visit.

Thanks for sharing!

;)

Family time, tourist time, hiking time, and pub time. What a vacation! The pics are beautiful - glad you had such a wonderful trip.
:)

Gig, looks like an awesome time with the family and the country out there looks awesome.
Good times... good times...

Thanks for the trip report and awesome pics of Eire Giggy! Brought back very fond memories of hiking Carauntoohil a couple of years ago....I remember admiring the impressive Beenkeragh ridge from the summit - definitely not for the faint of heart (like myself!!). Glad to see that you, Deb and Conor enjoyed the Torc Waterfall and the beautiful Gap of Dunloe!! Conor's turning into a hardcore little hiker :)

thx all -

I actually wasn't able to drink all that much :( - I was driving (wife can't drive stick) and with conor, the nights were early.

I did let loose one day/night for a good session - when i didn't have to drive and get up witrh conor.

Gris - yea, Killarney town is full of the fiddles and diddley dee's. Huge tourist area and everyone wants the irish music when there.

 Am I the only one who doesn't know what diddley dee's are ?

Sounds like a great trip, btw. Being of Scottish and German decent, I'll probably never visit Ireland, but you never know. ;)
