I was planning as you all know by now to climb Westkill to finish my 3500 footers in the Catskills, Thursday. I looked at a map and prepared an attachment recommending NY 42 north from Shandaken to Westkill and then Spruceton Road to get there. I just learned from a local that NY 42 is closed between Shandaken and Westkill. Is this true? I guess I will have to tell everyone meeting me up there to now go via NY 23A-->NY 42 south to Westkill. Right? Need to know so I get off at Saugerties and take 23A VS getting off at Kingston and taking NY 28 West. Thanks.

I've been on 42 several times in the past weeks. If you go slow, don't mind waiting, you can pass thru, unless they are doing something major. Might be a good idea to plan on the other route, just in case.

You might want to check the status at NYS Transportation Status. As of Saturday 6/18, evening, the status indicated:
New York 42 in both directions : from Greene County Line to Junction Route 28
road closed -
Comment: This road will may remain closed until MID-June. May be open by June 17th.
This website appears to have up to date status. It has the Northway reopening info which occurred late last night. Per Mudhook51's report it sounds like Route 42 has been at least partially reopened already.

Note the road closing was a result of the flooding that occurred on April 3.

Not reopened offically, this means you are not technically covered by insurance. We have used 42 since mid may.Again ,sometimes you can get thru, but don't count on it. Depends on what they are repairing and how the contractors are handling it.
