Ok, I didn't utter that, but it was amusing to hear it this morning. We started up for the Jay Range, and noticed immediately that the trail was severely post-holed. The snow was hard enough that the post holes were pretty much frozen in place. Bare booting would have been ridiculous. Wearing our snowshoes meant we kept turning our ankles. Snowshoes won, because there was still a lot of snow to fall into.

After about 1/2 an hour we caught up to two other hikers. They uttered the title line. We added further insults to the now gone bare-booters, and had a brief chat. They decided to try to go on by themselves. At this point the bare-booters must have turned back. We dropped down a small hill and then started up again trying to hit a ridge. The snow after the tracks stopped was not very supportive. We kept breaking thru almost every step. Once in a while, we could take 10 steps w/o falling thru, but this was rare.

Around 2800' we made the decision to turn back. It was tiring and we just weren't having fun. The walk down was almost as hard as the walk up. We did find a few nice view points. The predicted rain never showed up, and the clouds mostly ruled the day. Once or twice the Sun peeked thru.

Back at the trail head, the other 2 hiker's vehicle was still there. We also met a couple with HIKER46 license plates. After talking with us, they decided not to try the hike.

Posted using the free WIFI available at the Jack Rabbit Inn! :D Thanks guys!

We found much of the same climbing Cascade and Porter on Thursday. There are so many postholes on that trail that descending we kept putting on and off our snowshoes but it was qui uncomfortable and ankle twisting either way, oddly climbing and maybe because it was colder at that time wearing the snowshoes was no problem.

And when almost back to the trailhead we met a hiker and his dog without either a pack, a pair of snowshoes or a leash we almost felt ridiculous...

 The only thing worse than bare-boot postholes are snowshoe postholes ! ;)
