I'm bettin' from the base road to The Caps trailhead a week before Memorial Day, and the rest, from The Caps trailhead northward towards Rt 2, sometime around the second week in June. The northern part usually takes a beating during the winter.
But spring is on the way....YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Not that I don't like winter, but there's nothin' like spring in the Northern Woods. The smells, sounds, and visionary delights match no other season. You just have to use a lot of bug dope.
Put me in for after Memorial Day. A couple of years ago, I road my bike up part of the closed JN Rd. & then walked it up to Cap Ridge & later retreived the bike.
They've had better luck opening the road to the North Twin Trail just before Memorial Day.
Jefferson Notch road is usually open by Memorial day unless we have an "unusual weather event" which happens about 1 out of every 3 years. Generally its high wind event or heavy sustained rain that causes the problems. The DOT office that is responsible for its maintenance usually leaves its closed as long as possible to let it dry out (especially on the north end) so they only have to regrade it once. If there is a problem prior to Memorial day, they dont put a high priority on it as they have plenty of other work to do.
Last year was extraordinarily bad: Jefferson Notch Road and Mt Clinton road opened July 2 (although Mt Clinton had access to Edmands Path available in early May).
Haystack, Gale River, Zealand, and Wild River all opened mid-May.
