Yep! I wore them, along with my baggy cotton overalls, and plaid shirt. That was what I "learned" on. I'd be laughed off the mountain if I tried that today.

As long as you know what you have, and how it will perform, and how to deal with it, nothing is bad. I winter cycled for at least a dozen years wearing cotton pants...hitting -35F temps, as well as a foot of snow, followed by rain.

Oddly enouth, these days, I wear my winter cycling clothes. I don't have much clothes specifically for cold weather hiking.
