Jay, If you do a full moon kayak make sure you bring the devil horns, maybe some white sheets as well with a powerful lantern underneath! Switch them on at midnight close to a busy bar or campsite near the shore! See if you can generate any news reports of ghostly kayakers or phantom sea creatures.....

Sounds like fun. Maybe I should buy a boat.........

Laura, Next time we'll have to arm wrestle for the bed!

Seriously, the July kayak sounds like fun. Don't think I'll be able to make it although Maine is very tempting....... You can say the word Maine and it almost becomes a mantra to me, calling me north out of NYC in the hot summer months - Maine, Maine, Maine............

I'll have to call my cousins and see what they're up to later this summer. I'm fairly open in late August if anyone is game, then the first 2 weeks of Sept. it's the 100 mile wilderness with Papabear.

Whatever devil horns I don't distribute by the time of the catskill's gathering shall be distributed then. I still have a bunch after giving one to Donna while in Mass...

Donna, make sure you wear the devil horns proud! :)

Shawn, we have to get together in Wawayanda sometime soon. I want to further practice my wet exits and reentries... I'll call you sometime soon to see if you are free...

I gather Wawayanda is charge an entry fee now that it's post memorial day...
Do they still do this on weekdays or perhaps after 5pm?

Here are my pictures that I took from Wood River in the Arcadia WMA and also from Dutch Island in Narragansett Bay:

I guess GS doesn't have a slideshow but the thumbnails are larger than others...

Enjoy!

Sorry, I still haven't downloaded the pix from kayaking or from hiking in NH with Chomp. I have been very busy over the last 2 weeks and have hardly touched a pc. I'll tell you her name when I see you..... :D

Nice pix. The sky looked wonderful for a day out.

O-tay, without me doing the research, what is story with Dutch Island? The Battery? Jay, I couldn't make out the WARNING sign - "This place is covered with..."

In the picture of the boats on the beach - on the horizon is a bridge... what am I seeing??

It looks like it was a great time. I was just at the store checking out Kayaks. Not sure what makes sense yet. Although I'll use it mostly on my flatwater lake, I'm thinking I'd like some dry storage in case I want to paddle in for some hikes (like in the Oswagatchie area).

Is Darren like an equipment geek or what??;)

yeah, the sky was wonderful but you could smell and see a front coming in... This was on memorial day and when I was driving home, it started to rain once I got near the CT border..

As far as the sign, it says something like

"This area is coverred with Hazardous bunkers and underground cisterns

Hazardous conditions exist"

Since there wasn't any freshwater on the island the military used these cisterns as water storage, but the bulkhead hatches have all eroded and it is possible to fall down into one if it collapses.

As far as the history, this website will describe it better than I can:

Dutch Island Lighthouse Society

oops, one more question, the one with Darren getting sun tan, the bridge you see in the background is the bridge that connects Jamestown (the island in the narragansett bay) with Newport. There are two bridges, one that connects the west shore of the bay (where Exeter is) and Jamestown and one that connects Jamestown with Newport.

Jay, Those are good pictures, we have to do some more exploring soon! This NYC stuff I've been doing for the past few weeks is making me stir crazy! Hey, I got an idea...... maybe we should try exploring an island in Maine.;)

I have more bikes that Darren does... Pffffttttt.... :D

Have a good MS150! I've done one of those long time ago, don't pig out to much after the ride, eat a little every so often during the ride and practice your "on your lefts" :)
