A hiking buddy (AMC trip leader) offered the following excellent suggestion for cold fingers:
Tuck your hands in your crotch. Don't stick them down your pants, just tuck them between your thighs. It may look a little odd, but it really works better than armpits. Your thighs are big and there is ample warm blood flow in those muscles. This position keeps your hands low which is better for increased blood flow. Also, you won't have to open your jacket to get to your pits.
My fingers numbed up yesterday on the summit of Pierce in strong winds. A few minutes of this technique warmed them right up. Give it a try.
