I have been slowly hitting the trails looking over Moosehead Lake. They all have good scenery but some of the road approaches are rough. I've been to Little Kineo, both Spencers, Little Moose, Big Moose, and Eagle Rock. Perhaps the most famous mountain in the area Kineo I had put off.
Today I loaded up the kayaks and paddled across from Rockwood and finally climbed Kineo. The water was light chop with added chop from moderate boat traffic. We headed up the carriage road and climbed the Indian Path, listed as most difficult. The hike itself was relatively easy and short to the summit taking in some nice views along the ledges. It does go from just over 1000 feet at lake level up to just shy of 1800 feet at the summit. At the top we climbed the tower which offered good 360 views. Unfortunately the haze never disappeared and visability was limited somewhat. You could tell the views would be awesome on a clearer day. When we returned to the kayaks we paddled around to the spot under the cliff and did some cliff jumping from about 30 ft above the water. I'll definately return since it's only about a 80 minute drive but shoot for a clearer day. The return across the lake was definately a bit choppier but far from the worst I've paddled on Moosehead.
It was a pretty good day with paddling, hiking, and cliff jumping.
