Picked up a buddy in Amherst, NS then drove to Millinocket where we sampled a refreshment or two at the Blue Ox. Started from Roaring Brook at 6:50 am on Saturday (Helon Taylor trail, 58F), and reached treeline with reasonably good visibility. Next stop was Pamola where visibility had deteriorated noticeably. Next challenge was the descent into the chimney 
, where we received some much-needed guidance from "Ben" (many thanks). It was a long slog through worsening conditions to Baxter Peak, where a large crowd had gathered. It was beginning to rain, so we headed off down the Saddle trail (where another hiker joined us) to Chimney Pond, then back to Roaring Brook (42F at finish, 11 hours elapsed time). We had a nice supper, washed down with more refreshment , then headed home to NS.
