Who: MEB, Little Sister, Dr. Wu, Swamp, Gooly, Ferrisjrf, Gillian, Mtnpa and me.

Trail: Skookumchuck to Garfield Ridge, up to Lafayette and then Lincoln and then back the same way.

The original plan was to hike to Hale via the Fire Warden's Trail, so a group gathered at the Mountain Bean around the 9am meeting time. When all were accounted for (no Mats due to not feeling 100%) people started throwing out ideas for alternative above-treeline hikes due to the glorious day that seemed to be shaping up. After much indecisiveness, we decided on Lafayette via Skookumchuck to make the parking easy.

We all donned our snowshoes and finally hit the trail around 10am. The trail had a few new inches of soft snow which I assume didn't create too much work for those in the lead. We made steady progress and the small water crossings posed no problems. As we got closer to the ridge I stopped to make some gear changes and when I finished I found the rest of the group stopped just around the corner at the junction with the Garfield Ridge Trail chatting with Drew, Cath, LRiz and Eric who were traveling along the ridge on their way to Garfield.

The group had separated with Mtnpa, Swamp and Dr. Wu somewhere still en route to the junction. The rest of us headed up to Lafayette with a mix of crampons, snowshoes and microspikes, all of which were fine on the terrain we encountered. There were some icy patches on the north side of Lafeyette (more noticeable on the way down). The wind was a bit stronger but we had plenty of still stretches as well. Some photos on top of Lafayette (congrats Gooly on your first winter NH48!) and then naturally we decided that Lincoln didn't look too far away.

We made our way over to Lincoln through some patches of fluffy snow and crunchy ice and rocks. Quick stop on Lincoln and then back the way we came. Met only three other hikers up on the ridge including one fellow who was enjoying his first hike in the Whites and was planning to camp somewhere in the neighborhood of Greenleaf Hut.

Trip back out was uneventful. Mtnpa, Dr Wu and Swamp had opted for turning back after Lafayette, so they beat us to the Mtn. House where several of us stopped in for a quick visit.

Another fun day out! Pictures here: Franc Ridge 1.10.09

Met only three other hikers up on the ridge . .
Amazing that there were so few hikers on the ridge for any weekend, but especially for a brilliant blue-sky day like we had on Saturday.

Love your concise, short & easy-to-read report style . . . and your photos are outstanding. Good job! Great hike!
(The Skook is one of my favorite trails.)

Wow!!! Gorgeous, stunning. Jaw-droppingly beautiful. What a wonderful set of photos!!!! Glad you folks had such a good day up there.

Here are the few pics that I took Saturday. Beautiful day to be out...although the sun was a little too bright for me. Maybe next time I'll get lucky, and it'll be a little cloudier.

Either that or you could just try staying out of the whiskey, the sun seems less bright then too...

Looks like you guys had a good day Rebecca, definately a good crew. I'll have to poach some bandwidth tomorrow and look at the pics.

Sweet pictures! It was nice to bump into you guys on the ridge... especially since I thought that you all were climbing Hale. :)

What a gorgeous day, and great photos. Good job capturing the scene. That team is a strong group of hikers - starting up Skookumchuck at 10:00 and not only hitting Lafayette but Lincoln as well. Wow.

That's what I thought. Didn't have much water left when I stopped to layer up so I decided to turn back.

Some of the most amazing lighting conditions I've ever seen. On the way up Skook I would occasionally glance into the forest and see these pockets where the snow and trees had a wonderful blue tint. Never seen anything like it before

Well, I got the word-of-mouth TR on Sunday, but the photos are fantastic! (Jason, I couldn't look at yours without "joining" Snapfish.)

I particularly like #5, the treetop lighting is perfect. Nice work!

Rebecca, Could you photoshop Jason out of all pictures before posting in the future, please. I read on WebMD that exposure to such may cause cataracts in small woodland creatures and attractive redheads.

Maybe even fewer on THE Ridge the following day, given the fender bender on I-93 (see Metsky thread)? Anyway, THE Ridge and Franconia Notch rule over the Presi's! Great pics and fine report; thanks for sharing!

It was a great day indeed! the pics and tr are fantastic as well! I couldn't have asked for a better day to bag my first two winter 4k's! thanks everyone for a super hike...

I believe you must be thinking of someone else. ;)

At first I was confused, since you didn't seem to fit into either of the above categories...but I now understand your concern...given your resemblance to a small woodland creature. :D

Time to lock this thread!
