On Saturday, Nov. 12 without any particular fanfare, just the two of us together as is our custom, Lauky finished his third round of the 48 on the summit of Mt. Carrigain. It was originally planned for us to finish together on the Kinsmans as we did last year, but a recent knee problem forced a change in program and we picked up his final ones. I still have Owl’s Head and the Bonds, knee permitting, to finish my fifth round.

We started off on the road walk up Sawyer Road and examined the very impressive Irene washout.

Once up on the ridge the views were spectacular.

Lauky pauses to take in the views himself.

Up above the rime ice covered tower awaits our arrival

Once up on the tower we again take in the views.

The views from the top of Carrigain are certainly among the best of the 48

After “anointing” the summit, mission accomplished, Lauky the three timer headed back down

Way to go, Lauky and Ed!!

Terra and I have three or four more hikes to finish our fourth round together, and as rounds go, number five is close behind!

Lauky looks very snug in his red fleecy. :)

nice TR! thanks for posting...nice to see the road washout, heard it was bad...awesome images from the ridge area :)

A HEARTY CONGRATULATION TO THIS FINE FELLA!
:D:cool::)

Lauky and I thank you all for your kind remarks. I promised the vet I wouldn't start peak bagging with him until he was six months old and on that six month anniversary he bagged his first 4000 footer which was Wildcat D a very easy hike. He hasn't looked back. In fact I know he thinks that all dogs go out every Saturday to hike. At four years old, right now, he's been doing about a round a year.

It's funny how many people after asking about all the peaks he's done ask if I've done them too. My answer is usually, "Well occasionally he asks for the keys and takes off by himself, but I've done most of them with him." :D

Lol! Nice of Lauky to let you come along!

I begin to introduce hiking at 6 months as well for my fast growing, mid sized breed as well-- I feel comfortable doing so as long as mileage is limited and no scrambling until 10-12 months. We are UBER careful until 4 months - ten minute walks, no jumping on and off things-- then gradually start to introduce off leash romps.

Lauky is one cool dog. With stylish neckwear. Congratulations.

Yes, in addition to what I mentioned above, the Vet also told me no jumping or ledges until he was a year old. That we also obeyed. It's not that hard to do, actually, as there are a lot of peaks out there that are basic up and down walks.

I recently purchased some catastrophic (high deductible) health insurance for Lauky and he had to have a complete structural exam. He passed with flying colors and as usual the vets exclaimed at his musculature. His rear quads are like those of a Pitbull which no doubt is the reason he can jump so high.

In my estimation, the simplest way to fix that road would be to bring in a bulldozer and relocate the road to the bank side. The moved earth and rocks could be simply dumped in the hole. The uphill (up road) culvert that overflowed should probably also be worked on. I don't believe it was the culvert you see in the picture that caused the damage.

Congratulations Lauky!

Ed, it was great to meet you and Lauky on the summit of Zealand this past Saturday. Lauky is a beautiful and friendly dog, and 3 times is very impressive! I enjoyed the conversation, and again best of luck this winter wherever the trail takes you both.

Thanks DM and good luck on your pursuit of the Grid.

Very cool! I didn't realize Lauky and you had done the 48 so many times. I met you on Carrigain in 2009, and I guess that means he was still on his first or second round. I hope I can catch up with him someday :)

I keep full coverage on my pets and it's really been helpful.
Terra is insured through VPI but Pemi is covered through Embrace -- they seem to have a more flexible reimbursement plan.

Yes, that probably was his first round. I think one of my most memorable hikes took place up there during the winter of 2006-2007. I arrived up their with my Airedale Duffy. I was in full winter attire including full crampons. Up to the summit comes an MIT Russian student wearing only a T shirt and shorts with Tevas on his feet. His only concession to winter was a pair of socks. Once at the top he pulled out a light weight jogging suit and changed his socks, ate his sandwich and headed back down. I saw him back at the car, he did fine. To each his own.
