lincoln woods trail for xc skiing

Who all of you knows if there is enough snow to ski in the lincoln woods area this coming weekend? The big loop....

I know there is a ranger's hut there, of course--does anyone know if it/they post information online anywhere? after all they do groom big sections of it--wouldn't there be a way to look up when/whether/if the conditions are good?

I think you can take a chance

The day before the storm I walked down Elbow Pond Road in Woodstock and saw some ski tracks. The snowfall differences are probably negligable.

At Lincoln Woods you could take the East Side Trail (FR 38?) on the opposite side of the river. Lots of people ski there and there are no old railroad ties. It is drivable in the off season.

The East Side Trail is a lot more fun than the Lincoln Woods Trail. It has a few ups and downs, and is much less used by walkers than the Lincoln Woods Trail.

what I like to do is the whole big loop, into the wilderness area--you get both sides of the river and some deep woods this way...

I'm going to ski the loop on Saturday. Based on the new snow amounts posted on the Loon website, the trails should be skiable. We will see.

I do not think that USFS "groomed" either trail last winter (not much snow anyway that low last year), but at one time the USFS did set track in the Lincoln Woods Trail. However, in late November, the LWT had some new very deep ruts in it created by the trucks involved with the Franconia Brook bridge construction. Not sure if the USFS groomed those ruts.

The last I heard, USFS is not planning to groom out those LWT ruts until spring. Overnight temps through Sunday are predicted in the single digits above, cold enough to re-freeze the trail every night if the snow cover gives way with lots of traffic this weekend. But I wouldn't expect great skiing on that part of a Pemi loop this weekend. It should be better further away from the "madding crowd" route.

The snowshoeing off the Kanc today was awesome. I was mostly between the Sawyer Pond and Sawyer River TH's and there was a foot of dry powder. The temps will stay cold all week and an occasional flurry between now and then should give you good skiing for Saturday, especially once you get beyond the Falls cutoff.

Wahhh! I was supposed to go on a ski trip this weekend but a work trip got scheduled and now I can't go play.

A nice side trip off the Lincoln Woods Trail is Black Pond. Once at the pond, if the ice is safe, skirt the edge to the north shore. Sunny lunchtime rock there that on my visits had melted and dried before everything else.

A big ski loop sounds awesome...would love to hear how you make out, Carla. Also, I've got some days off next week and would be up for xcountry skiing...any one else ???
