Hopefully this isn't too far off the hiking topic, but since many of you are familiar with ANP....

I need some ideas for inexpensive places to stay in the Acadia area (preferably on the island itself) for my parents-in-law, a gift we're hoping to give them next summer. They aren't into camping, so I'm looking for cottages or bed & breakfasts, with shower, electricity, etc. Preferably in a quieter, less crowded area. Thanks!

You want the Kingsleigh Inn in Southwest Harbor.

I had a great experience with them and highly recommend them to anyone. Nice room and superb, stuffed french toast for breakfast!

They also have great, professional customer service, something a lot of B&Bs are lacking b/c of their mom and pop nature.

We've stayed at a quite a number of B&Bs that have been just "mom and pop" kinda places, and at each and EVERY one the customer service has been absolutely wonderful. It's been our experience that these "mom and pop" B&Bs have pretty unique flavors, and we've been fortunate to have met some really interesting folks while staying at them. One if particular stands out ... a very "homey' B&B in Anchorage, Alaska, where the "pop" came over to the states during the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, and did he have stories to tell!! And he was one of the most gracious and accomodating hosts we've ever encountered, full of hiking info for the area, etc., and "mom" prepared some of the best breakfasts ever! And it seems that the other folks staying at these B&Bs have all been colorful characters as well, and we've enjoyed sharing our meals with them.

I suppose it's all in your definition of "professional". :D

We were up there in August and it was quite crowed. The campgrounds were full and the state one we were in told us we were lucky to get a spot as people book in Jan. for their vacations there. Matter of fact some poor Ranger was getting blasted by some city slicker because her site was still occupied by someone that didn't check out and couldn't be found. The women kept going on and on asking the Ranger to do this or can't you do that and I'm not happy with your system, etc. Mean time I was waiting in another line to get registered for an hour.

I wouldn't wait until the last minute in finding a place to stay.

It was a beautiful park and wouldn't mind going back there. Stop at the visitor center first to get the maps, info, etc.

The game in Acadia NP area for low-cost lodging is always " how close can you get without being raped"

Truth is, the best views and the best approaches to those views ( there is a context to ANP from the outside which one needs to appreciate) always seem to be from "a little bit away".

Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor, and Tremont are all technically " On Island Time" yet not knee deep in the scramble for the biggest bucks. Good values are to be had there.

One does have to travel a distance from Ellsworth thru and beyond the park boundaries to reach these places, but it is truly worth the trouble to do so. One will see the area in overview and have an aprecciation of the possbilities, get lower rates, and still be within striking distances of everything the area has to offer.

Gas prices will always factor into this equation, so take the time to look closely at the pump prices at the Ellsworth Carwash ( the Rt 1/3 triangle intersection in Ellsworth) and Carrolls IGA in Trenton, near the airport. As of late Aug 2005, these stations had the cheapest gas area wide.

I'm up there frequently because my Mom is in assisted living care at Sonogee.
